Cooke Aquaculture has several net pen fish farms in north Puget Sound. After the sinking of nets that weren't properly maintained and the break up of the farm at Cypress Island resulted in the release of 2 or 3 hundred Atlantic salmon, the WA Legislature passed a law prohibiting the culture of Atlantic salmon in PS after 2022. So Cooke has applied for a permit to switch the Cypress Island farm from Atlantic salmon to triploid rainbow trout or steelhead. The SEPA notice public comment period was extended for an additional time a week or so ago. Opponents of the project are asking or demanding that the permit undergo a full EIS review.
