30.06 varmint bullets
Anyone ever use those small 30.06 55-65 gr sabots? I'm going on a coyote hunt and was thinking of trying them out but haven't talked to anyone who has used them. Are they reasonably accurate? Any input welcome. Thanks.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
i tried them one time and did not have good results at all, they were not consistent at all. i loaded some 110 grain hollow points and no problem at all. maybe i didn't play with them long enough, someone else might have a better idea.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
I have shot 130gr speers w/pretty good luck. Not much kick, and they shoot pretty well in my gun. I have also shot rats w/ cheap remington 150's (needed brass) and that wasn't too bad either (except for the rats   who were just a tad overdead)

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
Unless you are really concerned about the hide, I would just use your regular 30.06 round. It makes it so you dont have to resight your gun, and it gives you more actual time behind the trigger until next deer or elk season. Good luck.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
I shot up a couple of boxes of Remington Accelerators a few years ago. I think they had a .22 cal bullet in the sabot. They seemed to be about as accurate as I am. I liked them, coyotes didn't.

Keep us updated on the results of what you try. I too shoot an 06 and am interested to see what you choose and how it works.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
I'd have to agree with ORoutdoorsman. Use the same load you normally use for deer/elk. Shooting coyotes is great for getting familiar with shooting game with your rifle, why use a totally different load? And those light 22 caliber bullets at 4000 fps are going to do a lot more damage to the hide than a standard 165 or 180 grain bullet out of a 30-06. But, of course there is nothing wrong with trying them just for the fun of it. One thing, recoil will be a lot less, and that is an advantage.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
Plus, the lighter bullets (like 110s, 130s), in a .30 cal. rifle, end up being pretty SHORT! This is o.k. at close range, but it's NOT what you want for shooting at any distances greater than perhaps 150 yards.
They're just the wrong SHAPE for flying long distances. Also, if a rifle were "setup" for shooting lighter/faster bullets it would want to have a SLOWER twist barrel, something that most
"06s" don't have.

Re: 30.06 varmint bullets
Thanks for the replies. I didn't try the ultralight bullets because I didn't have time to resight before the hunt. They are somewhat intriguing though, I'll probably buy a box soon and shoot em at the range. No dogs though I guess they didn't like 10 below and 30+ mph winds. Not too many animals moving at all, big surprise  Nice central OR road trip though.
