I think the season is closed for valley quail, but I'm not looking at the regs. If it is still open head out to the north unit of sauvis island. From the parking lot you will notice several large black berry mounds. They are full of quail. The problem is getting them out.

To get them out of there first get a good dog. then convince the good dog that this is a great place to go. then gather up a bunch of sticks, rocks, dirtclods, etc. & start throwing them in at one end. Slowly work your way to the front of the bush - they should flush. did i mention this works best in combination with a good dog.

I (my dog & I) heve flushed coveys of 50-80 birds out of these bushes. but it usually takes a good 30min or so of bombarding the birds with a random assortment of debris and several pushes by my lab. Once they flush they will go to the next bush & the process starts over.

Yup...the season is closed for valley quail. However mountain quail season runs thru January 11. Your best bet would be in the east side of the Coast Range or in western Cascade foothills...on south-facing slopes in or on the edges of clearcuts from 2 to 10 yrs old. There are dang few mtn quail in heavily forested areas or on north-facing slopes.

analfin : I'll give you my super-secret spot

West on 26, past Manning, 3/4 mile past the tunnel, turnout on south side. Longview gate. Walk the road down to the begining of the clear cuts (miles of young clearings). You'll find the coveys around the brush piles. Have fun. I hope you and your boy get to chase the birdees around.

Make sure you know the difference between Mountain and Valley Quail. When you get to the bottom of the valley you might find Valleys.

I flush a couple coveys of mountain quail in the Mt Hood NF clear cuts every time I go there to hunt for jungle chickens and thunderbirds. You will need a dog.
