Default One last Chuckar hunt - any suggestions?

Well my Orergon Bird and fishing licenses are coming to an end on the 31st. Now that I'm a Vancouverite , I don't know that I'll renew in 2004 (now I know why WA does it in March/April).

Anyway my dad and I are heading towards the John Day for a chuckar hunt this weekend, and I was wondering if anyone has had any success lately. I don't have a dog, but I understand the whole "approach them from up-hill" strategy. Does anyone have any good suggestions for public areas? Most of the birds I've seen around the lower river were too far up to walk up to without a boat( ). I beat the brush around the Deschutes earlier this year with no success.

Anyway, I've never successfully hunted for them so I thought I'd ask the experts. Thanks for any advice (people can PM me if they'd feel more comfortable).

Try hay creek, it is past the John Day river. Take the rd. out of Wasco, heading due East. It is on the bluffs east of the JD River. BLM map will show you where it is at.

Try Sutton Mountain area out of Mitchell. Turn toward the Painted Hills and go a few miles and the area is on your right. There are some signs that mark the designation. There's lots of draws that hold both quail and chukar. The closer you get to the mountain itself the better chance for birds.

Good luck and don't forget to give us a report.
