Default Wilson Youth Hunt

Anyone have a tip(s) on where we might find some elk in the Wilson Unit? Have spent two days up around Flagpole Ridge out behind Camp 18.

On opening day we glassed 5 cows about 700 yards away, hopped in the truck and headed down a spur road that would take us in closer. We did get closer but it was still about 300 yards and too far for a 12 year olds first shot at an animal (one of our hunting buddies graddaughter). As we watched the cows grazing, we noticed an old road at the lower edge of the clearing and headed out to find it. We found it! As we approached the clearing we knew it was only a matter of going another 100 yards before they would be right above us giving our hunter an 80 yard shot. As we approached our hearts sank. There was a shot, then another, then another, and then four more. Some &*&**&&* let his son pop off 7 shots from about 700 yards, shooting through a small opening in a line of timber between them and the elk. They were not far from where we originally saw the elk. The only good thing about the experience is the lesson learned by the kids on what NOT to do.

Do you have access to a GPS? If so, I can put you right in the middle of them.

Doing the right thing is more important that the kill. And, in my experience good hunting Karma comes back around. Good luck!

Hey Lil' Buddy,
Try Cook Creek. Saw elk there every day recently, and Isaac and I got into piles of 'em 3 years ago up there.
Good Luck--already acting as a guide eh?

You also might want to try at the drift creek- larch mountain turnoff on hwy 6. My boy got a shot off at close range this weekend and missed. He had is power turned up to 9. Add some condensation and water on the lense. Not all his fault. I should have checked where he had his power set. We saw lots of elk over the weekend most of them high like around triangulation point and high up on diamond mill rd. You also might be extra carefull with the stuffed elk. We ran into a nice trophy bull and a cow fake that is. State Police came screaming in just before my boy put a hole in the cow. We did everything right, no shooting from the truck or across the road. The game warden was really nice. He said they catch alot of fathers shooting their kids elk. All I was thinking was how great its going to be to finally get a elk out of the woods in one piece. Any time im around elk that have been killed or I have killed they come out in pieces.

I took my nephiews out last weekend also. Saturday one of them took a shot at a cow about 80 yards and missed. We looked for 3 hours for any sign and found nothing. we were up off of four seven ridge.

Sunday we found 3 more like you did they were around 800 yards away. I wouldn't let him soot unles he got closer. I watched him and the elk get within 150-200 yards apart and he could not find them to get a shot off.

Better luck next weekend for everyone. There was one camp that was next to us at the Spruce Run camp ground off the nehelam river that got 2 on sunday.
