Looks Like Cold is Coming!
If you believe the weather person, it looks like cold weather is finally going to hit up north, which will likely push some of those fat, norther birds down our way. So, how long does it take for those birds on the sounds up there to get here?

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
The Samish, Padilla, and Skagit bays have a total of 560,000 plus birds there now. I hunted in a leased field next to the Samish saturday. Drove in 6:00 a.m. shooting time 7:20... Jumped thousands in the fields getting to the blind. Sart flying prelight but continue til 8:00 or so. PROBLEM IS that they are heading out to raft up in the bay. Shot no birds, no rain... walked up to the dike to see them you know whats and there was enough birds to walk across... They rarely get snow covered fields in Skagit county so I wouldn't count on those birds heading our way.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
Hey Wife&3Kids,
Do you have information on the alleged DU "project" that I've heard rumors about that some say is what's drawing/holding all those birds up there?
What and where are they and what are they comprised of?

Lots and lots of feed. Nothing like baiting the birds to safe zone.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
The food source up there has to get covered with snow that's too deep to forage in first. Then, they will come.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
They are coming...They will be here in February.
Thanks to DU for making their winter habitat in Canada so nice.
Congratulations Mexico on another great February-March with unlimitied duck hunting.
P.S. Mexico, sorry we sent so many Pintails to your country. I know they eat too much wigeon food. Just ignore them.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
Well we need something new on sauvies Island. All the old birds that have dodged all of my shots the last couple of months are so gun shy that they hear a shot in salem and fly up an extra 500 yards here on sauvies Island. Its a joke how weary they are. We totally need some newbies! PLLLLEEEEASSSSSEEEE send some new birds here.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
It wouldn't hurt my feelings at all to shift the duck season later by two weeks. I usually go once or twice during opening week, then not again until mid to late Nov - too busy with big game. Besides, the last couple of years didn't shoot reql well until the last week of the season.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
ORS,
They probably WOULD have the season "later"...if they could.
But the reason they don't is they CAN'T under the Federal framework guidelines. It mandates WHEN the season MUST be closed.

Re: Looks Like Cold is Coming!
Yep, me too!
While "wishing", I wish they'd move the refuge boundary out on Holman Point to out into the WATER (at "regular" tides), like it is in several other places that border Sturgeon Lake.
