Re: Tuna Candy
They look very purdy....certain to catch fishermen during the off season. Now go forth and buy 2 of every color
The serious question is....how will they ride in the water. Normally, for high speed trolling, you want a bullet shaped head.

Re: Tuna Candy
They look really GOOD. Tuna with their excellent eye sight could look in their eyes and see lunch. How long til next season?

Re: Tuna Candy
So something more along the lines of Sevenstrand Clone or Zukers Clone/Feather then. Pref Colors might be Zucchini, Mexican Flag, Black/Purple?

Re: Tuna Candy
Those will work just fine! As long as the tuna are close enough , as long as you have a ride to the grounds , as long as the tuna are hungry , as long as you still have money left for gas after spending too much on gear , as long as you are good enough at hiding the credit card statement each month ! Good luck! The look just fine!

Re: Tuna Candy
One never has enough tuna clones, brooms, candy or whatever. You just never know what they will hit. I remember some years ago we couldn't touch any albies with the standard Zuker Brooms we were using. All the standard go to colors were not producing. I had purchased a couple root beer colored Zuker brooms and forgot about them in the offshore box. I dug around , found them and threw them out behind the Yozuri diving boats. WHAM, WHAM. We got our only hits and keepers that day on Root beer colored Zukers. I never go without a large selection to choose from anymore. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.
Those Megabaits look nice. Why not give em a try? I own some also but have yet to get them wet.

Re: Tuna Candy
Have the ride, the time, I hope the gas money, and best of all, no one to scold me about credit card statements.
I want to put together a solid starters inventory of tuna hardware, gear, and lures. Problem is that I am a big-time sucker for pretty colors. (example - have yet to catch anything on Kwikfish but I must owe 20-30 of darn things). That being said, I want to try and be a bit more discerning in my spending on Tuna fishing.
If I have this straight, I should plan on Clones/Feathers, Plugs, Traps, supporting rigging supplies and hardware. 6" lures as a starting point?
I have a couple of 7ft rods good for trolling that are rigged with Tekota 800's and about 500yrds of 80lb braided (plan to use for halibut and tuna) I have a couple of Accurate reels with 50lb braided looking for a pair of casting rods
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Tuna Candy
For the trolling rods, you'll want to tie on mono topshots onto the braided. Even if it's just 50 yards of 40 - 50 lb....CLEAR or clear/blue.

Re: Tuna Candy
Why the top shot? I tie right to my swivel with no top shot! On the other hand when trolling fish traps and hydro mags I like to have mono right to the lure, but the clones and such have 7 or 8 feet of heavy mono already.
anyway that reminds me, get some hydro mags by yo zuri. One trip last year that was just about all they would take. The next trip I could not get them to take one. That was a fish trap show that day. They will swallow those hydro mags clear down. Very cool. You can see it in my videos!

Re: Tuna Candy
Tuna troll with straight spectra long enough and you'll find out.
1) Mono is far less visible to fish
2) Spectra makes horrible tangles
3) Mono is a shock absorber
4) You can make the topshots the exact length you want the line to be out.....tell your crew "let it out to the knot."
5) Mono is cheaper, when you are frequently cutting & re-tying lures.

Re: Tuna Candy
6) When you break off with mono it doesn't float around and get caught in prop shaft seals.

Re: Tuna Candy
What kind of knot do you use to attach the mono to the braided line?

Re: Tuna Candy
Those lure heads look just like some I had that were made of a pearl colored plastic from about the 60's. They caught fish BIG TIME, until a series of unfortunate events amidst a hot bite caused me to lose two in a row! Anyhow, when they're biting on the troll, it'd be hard to go wrong with one of those. -D

Re: Tuna Candy
When I saw Candy I thought of small squid. Fishing So. Cal in the 80's we used a lot of 6/7 inch squid. They were called Candy because all the species loved them. Bet we would do well up here with them and they are hardy live bait. Then there was Candy in 9th grade.

Re: Tuna Candy
8Knots, how do you rig those small squids for the troll?
I've been catching quite a few of them here in the Sound the last few weeks. I was thinking of using them as chum to keep the fish around the boat. Never heard of any one rigged them up for trolling.
