A weird deal all around
Well I have an interesting story to tell from my last 6 months and how it can happen to everyone out there. I have taken a few people bear hunting in the last few years because simply I hate the beasts in my elk hunting ground and like to see them dead. So some ifishers have joined me and another contractor on one of our jobs begged and pleaded for me to take him on a weeeknd. I agreed to do it in August since I would be scouting anyhow for elk. He asked for a estimate of price of how much three nights would cost him in town. I said probably 300 bucks for hotel, food, and gas for two people. So he was game and brought his dad along. We hunted friday night, through sunday morning, seeing three bears, one he couldn't find in his scope at 100 yards and finally touching off some shots at a monster on sunday morning. We drove his truck over to the ridge that the bear was on and I threw in my Alaskan II frame pack w/ my knives, spotting scope, and lots of hunting goodies in case we have to pack him out. As it turns out he missed and headed home with his dad. Well my pack was in the back of his truck. I called about a week later and he agreed to get it back to me asap since I needed it for elk season. Now the weird part.
Two weeks go by not hearing from him, so I call, and call, and finally do a *67 to block my number and wow? He answers. He's on his way to California for a job in two days so I tell him I'll have someone come up there to get it (salem). He agrees, but won't answer my buddies call and off he goes. Now, 5 months later he's on another one of our jobs and I asked him where it was at? He said he'll give it back when he gets a bear this year. WHAT?!!! Since when were we playing this game? He said since he was out a bunch of money and didn't get a bear he would hold it until he does since I told him he would probably get one. Well he did shoot at one, but he said it was my fault he missed because he was informed by me that most shots would be around 250 yards and this one was 325. Hence, he would hold on to it. I was so mad I had to leave for a while. He finally agreed to give it to his boss after I threatened to turn him into the police and said he would turn me in for guiding without a license. He gave me 30 bucks one morning for gas that HE OFFERED FOR. The only reason he knows about this is it came up in a conversation and I told him I can't take any money for services rendered and he obviously remembered it. But offering to pay gas when he's in my truck is a grey area. I shouldn't be expected to pay for him to hunt with his tag when I'm not even carrying a rifle, so I let him buy it. So now I'm flaming mad, and he says well you really made me mad talking about all the good salmon fishing going on and would rather be there than hunting hard with me, so I'm keeping it. And the yardage on the bear was too far, so he'll hang onto it until the end of the next trip. I originally said he could come back whenever to get one, but you're kidding yourself now.
My words were "You actually think there will be a next trip after this?" If you're willing to hold my freaking pack hostage, what would you do if we didn't see one? Or I would trust you standing behind me with a firearm? Good luck with the state cops here in a few days if I don't hear from your boss tomorrow. To throw in the fun, there's enough equipment in the pack (spotting scopes, etc...) that it will go over the 1,000 dollar mark, making it a felony theft charge. I say give it your best shot on the guiding without a license on me (300 dollar fine with absolutely no proof or contracts) and have fun in jail and the loss of your job over a hunting pack.
So in the end I'm going to repeal most of my hunting/fishing with people I don't already know that ask to go because frankly I'm not interested in this stuff happening again. I've taken quite a few ifishers out without asking for a dime and all have agreed to stand by me so far. Maybe I'll change my tune in the future but I'm pretty peeved at this right now, but shows how easily one person can cause a really bad situation and will be an interesting learning experience if it's not out of his hands tomorrow.

What a crock! If he really tries to pull any of that guiding crap on you, give me a call. I'll vouch for you. Always had a good time down there and hope I'm welcome again in 04.

Yep, I'm with Foley...that REALLY Sucks!
Go get him!
Ya know...just a thought... I wonder if he still really HAS your pack/gear?!!
Could it be that he doesn't? That maybe somebody swiped it out of the back of his truck and he knows he'll have to pony up the $$$ to replace it and doesn't want to?!! I wonder?

Re: A weird deal all around
I'm sorry to hear about stories like that Tailchaser. I wish you luck in recovering your gear withour too much hassle or trouble. Regardless of how it finally turns out you can count your blessings that you have learned far more in life than the person that hasn't returned your pack and its contents.
It is situations like the one that you describe that takes the fun out of trying to share the passions that many of us have for hunting with others.
Let us know how it turns out and good luck.

Definitely turn him in! A visit by the authorities will most likely get your pack back. Then you can decide if you should press charges. Good Luck.

Re: A weird deal all around
Simply amazing ....
I would have turned him in long ago for theft. When you asked for it back and he said no, it either became theft or blackmail.
If you need somebody to drive to Salem and pick it up let me know. I would be happy to show up during the day and have it handed to me, or take GRB and we could be the repo man.
I have been down that road taking somebody hunting and then they turn out to be something other than human, ....even after I held his hand from start to finish in killing a 4 point bull that he had no chance of killing by himself. Rick now has a P in front of his name when somebody refers to him  and we havent spoken since and it has been a couple years. At this point I wouldnt give him a bandaid if he was bleeding to death.

Re: A weird deal all around
I'd edit the stuff about paying for gas out of your post, then dare him to turn you in. If he has no way to prove he gave you anything for the trip, how is anyone going to get you on it? What a slime ball. Just to clarify, he's NOT an ifisher, right?

Re: A weird deal all around
Thanks for the reply's guys and offers to help. He called me first thing this morning and supposedly the pack is on a truck heading here and will be here this evening. I guess he had a good night of thinking about the cops over a hunting pack. If this doesn't turn out to be true, I may take you guys up on a "little visit" from a fellow ifisher. I can't say I trust anything that comes from the forked tongue, but he's bought himself another day by saying it's on the truck and out of his hands.
I'm actually not hiding from the fact he paid for the gas. I actually thought it was common practice since I wasn't carrying a gun, didn't care to shoot one, and he was. He was in my truck and I don't feel I should have to pay for his hunting. If I get a ticket for 30 bucks worth of gas and I'm proven otherwise, then I'll accept it, but I give buddies gas money all the time when I'm going with them, so I don't see where it breaks the law.

Tailchaser,
If I am not mistaken, didn't something like this happen two years ago? I remember you telling me about a guy taking off at night and not returning. Was this the same dude?
I wouldn't mind being a repo man for a day.

Re: A weird deal all around
No actually that was someone different, he was an actual ifisher, but he didn't really do anything wrong, just came and went in a night without saying why. That was only strange, this guy has my stuff. I'll release the ifish repo crew after tonight if I don't see the pack with all of the contents.

Re: A weird deal all around
This is just crazy, I would think that if I could trust anyone it would be the people I am hunting with.
I would do a complete inventory of the pack and if it is not all there I would still turn this guy in for theft.
What would of happened if you had fell or something, would this guy just take your truck also and run.
If this guy is an ifisher, we should all know his name so we don't take him anywhere

Re: A weird deal all around
The guy sounds like a major dirtball. If taking $30 for gas is considard guiding, I know more than one of that are guilty of the same offense. Now if was $500 for gas, that might be a different story . You just have to believe carma will catch up to people like that.

When the pack arrives, check not only the count of things but thier condition too. Somehow, I wouldn't put it past this guy to wreck the scope or have something come up missing from the pack.

Re: A weird deal all around
Well the pack is officially under control. It's in Yachats, but he gave it to the city officials I work with up there and it's under lock and key waiting for my next trip up there. However, I won't know if everything is in there until next week when I head back up to get it. But I'm happy it finally made it this far.

I’m glad everything worked out in the end. Kinda. He still should have to deal with some sort of repercussions for having your pack for that long. How about the repo team turns into the mob? j/k.

I wish he was family, I could've beaten him without being worried about a lawsuit as much. I'm not over it quite yet until I verify everything is in my pack when I pick it up. But at least it's out of his hands now.

Re: A weird deal all around
Report it to the police and sue him in civil court (small claims is the easiest). Don't do anything illegal yourself. The system will work if you use it properly, it may take a little patience but work with it. I like the law suit the best, it works everytime and you even get your filling fees back or you get to do fun thing like garnish wages (always popular with employeres), put liens on vehicles or homes.

Re: A weird deal all around
Sorry to leave you guys hanging....I did get it and yes, it had all of my things in it. However, they were not where I left them so he had taken them out for one reason or another, but put them back in. Probably after I threatened him with remembering everything that was in it the day I saw him. So everything is back in good hands but I'm curious this fall if he bothers calling. Thank god for caller id.
