Went to Clatskanie yesterday (Sat.) - Weather was ok - nothing flying - Where are the northern birds? Sheesh - one bird in three trips up there - pathetic!

Grabbed the dog and headed for the woods to chase jungle chickens and thunderbirds. Where did all the grouse go? Seven flushed (I think one was a reflush), four shots and two ruffed grouse in the bag. Not bad for a late season afternoon hunt.

Coyotes!

Went over to a friend's place in eastern Oregon and collected four. Overall they were kinda shy and not buying into my howling at all. I think the elk and deer hunters have been hammering away at them, along with the local ranchers. All four came in to our calls, and each one was a classic in its own right. It's not unlike watching birds work over the decoys.

Speaking of which, we saw a couple of herds of geese in a big long field and I almost drove off the road. Flushed a big covey of quail and almost.... well, you know. Didn't push out any chukar, but I think that was because we were hunting the low country.

The sunrises were worth the whole trip over.

Finally,
One of my reservations at Sauvie Island wasn't a 50 degree sunny day....I didn't get drawn. I stayed home and made sawdust. I seen a lot of McMinnville Duck Hunters (that belong to private clubs) in town Saturday morning so I guess my ears were right (I always hear the shooting way up here). It was awful quiet around the Basket Slough duck clubs(on the way to a his-hers shopping trip). Seen one guy loading up with two birds.
I seen the 2004 Sports-Pac went up to 130 clams.

All of the ducks are gone! Since the water went down the ducks must have also. It was the fewest number of birds ive seen all year? Im still waiting for thoes washington birds that everybody is talking about to come on down. Bring on the cold!

Took my dog goose hunting on the 24th. Had a good shoot. Done by 10:00, 1 tav, 1 lesser, 2 cack's. There were about 15 birds on the sheet at the check station in Yamhill county, but I think 3 limits. Saw quite a few ducks but didn't set up for them. Not huge numbers of geese, I just happened to be in a good spot.

Headin over the Cascades in the morning to the big desert to chase chukars for a few days.

Went duck killing on the 24th. 250 or so on the pond in the morning. Bumped them off. Maybe 20 came back, and of those 10 offered shots. Total kill was 5 birds on the ground. 3 cripples made it across the river :depressed: .
