Default First Elk!!!!

Hey Everyone!!

I just got back from hunting the Starkey experimental forest last week. I shot my first cow elk. I had a bad shot but I ended up tracking her for hours and finding her  I am really excited. It dressed out at 290. I am 17 and my sister is three years older than me and she also got her first elk out of starkey a few years ago. Hers dressed out at 320. But I was really excited for her. By the way I am a new member and just joined a few months ago

Congratulations on your first elk!

It's been 33 years since I took my first elk, but can still remember the whole hunt vividly.

Way to go on the first Elk. I got my first Elk, a spike 34 years ago. Even though I was 9 at the time, I can still remember him and those cows coming down the bank not 50 yards away. Have killed plenty since then and remember all of them like it was yesterday. But, the first one is still the best.

The Starkey Experimental Forest is awesome!!! In the first three days I saw close to 75 or 100 elk. I dont know if it was just lucky or what. It is a great place to hunt and for now on we are going to apply for tags there every year..

Did you see any big bulls while you were there? Nice job and good tracking. Sometimes ...happens.

When I was there in the herd that I shot my cow there was a nice 5 by 5 in the group. One of our other guys in the group saw two more nice bulls. So there is definetly some nice animals in the forest

Hehe, my friends and I have hunted the Experimental Forest a few times...seems like I always "luck into" an Elk...I've never seen a big bull in there.

But just about ALL my other party members have had what would have been "easy" shots at just incredible bulls!

In fact, a couple of guys saw these big 6x6 bulls and were so intent on watching them, that when some cows walked out (in easy range) they FORGOT to shoot!

congrats! That first elk experience won't ever be forgotten. I remember my first one. The first day of the first time out for elk with a rifle. Just got lucky I guess. Had no real clue how to dress it even. A gal in our group (more man than most guys) showed me the ropes. Boy it tasted good, everytime I ate it. Now on into bow so it's getting tougher.
Good job and good luck next year,
GBS

Congrats!

Shot my first elk when I was 14. It was opening day, about 4pm, and I was dog tired. My dad's buddy told me to keep on pushing, that you just never know. Next reprod strip we pushed a cow came trotting by me in some vine maples at 15 yards and I stuck an arrow into her ribcage. Just like that it was over! Then the deer tag was filled the next day and I got to experience what it was like to not have a tag for most of a season and thats no fun either!!

Starkey sounds like a fun hunt, congrats again on your elk!
