Forecast is Dicey but.....
So if a guy was to drive down in the AM for a hairy eyeball toward the ocean either at Newport or Tillimook and it looked do-able - not marginal, but do-able - and he wanted to chase some Ling Cod, where might he want to focus his search?
PMs or posts would be greatly appreciated - Coords or general area as we are willing to do our homework.
Thank - 5Salt

After January 1st. The ocean is closed to bottom fishing until the first of the year, you can fish Tillamook bay on the inside jettys and I think only from the rocks, I may be wrong but I am sure someone will correct me. Arima Billy.

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
Mikey, we might want to get more specific.
Open outside 40 fathoms. You can keep lings, and other deepwater rockfish such as yellowtail, widows, vermillion.... of course NO canary or yelloweye.
N end of Stonewall banks would be a good bet; lots of lings, yellowtail, & widows there last spring.

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
True, true Marcus.
I suppose I was considering the haunts that I utilize around Depoe and didn't even think about the 40+ fathom lines. I haven't caught a deep water rockfish in a long time. In addition, I tend to shy from places that I catch yellowtail.
Agree with the forecast assesment?

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
No doubt the forecast is not good. However, they have been calling for bad wx to arrive since this am only for it to stay away for another 12hrs. Hoping same senario exists in the am and we can sneek out. If we only go 5 miles and need to turn around then so be it.
We check actual at stonewall before leaving house and decide if we need to give it the hairy eye ball.

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
Assuming it is safe to go, what would a guy want to throw at those lings on the norht end of the bank?
I have a few good ideas but always open to suggestions.

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
I went out a few weeks ago and ended up with some big lings. We kept it simple using white jigs with squid. This was at the north end of the pile.

Re: Forecast is Dicey but.....
I like bait for big lings.
I'd run large whole herring on a mooching rig.
