Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
You like recoil? The .300 UM has the same recoil as a .375 H&H,which is more than 2X your .308.
The .300 UM is an awesome cartridge, but is more than most guys can shoot well. Without a muzzle break,it won't be fun to shoot, how much are you going to practice? With a muzzle break, you'll need to wear hearing protection in the field,or you'll probably do serious hearing damage.
If your a casual shooter, and only take it out of the closet during hunting season,I think there are better choices. Maybe a .300 Win mag? or a 300WSM? Both will be more than enough at 400yds,and will be easier to shoot well.
I just picked up a .300WSM a few weeks ago,and plan on trying it on elk this year. With a 180gr. bullet it has just shy of 1900lbs of energy at 400yds. It has more recoil than a 30-06,but less than my .338. It should be a great elk rifle.
Oh yea,the .300UM is actually a Remington cartridge, not Winchester.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
I customized a 7mm ultra mag. Shoots great with a muzzle break. Shot it once without a break and I won't be doing that again. I used to shoot 50 calibers bolt actions in the military, so recoil is no stranger to me. I think the 300 ultra is way too much for deer as is the 7mm ultra. Both are great cartridges. I am planning on using mine for long range stuff. The snipers in the Navy used 308's at very long distances. You just have to know your gun and the bullet characteristics, what will it do with a down range cross wind. Lots to know have fun learning and experimenting.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
RR,
I purchased a Browning SS 300UM two years ago and put two boxes of ammo through it at the range. Luckily there was a recall on the rifle and I exchanged it for the 300WSM. The 300UM was a brute! I am 6'1" about 210lbs. and work out regularly. I think that part of hunting is getting out and shooting until your are proficient with your weapon. I did not enjoy shooting the 300UM. The 300 WSM is a lot more fun to shoot and the ballistics are very similar. My suggestion is to wait until you can find a 300WSM or other round.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
I use a Rem.300 Ultra Mag for both deer and elk hunting. I even got my antelope with it this year. It is a remarkable gun that will reach out and touch that fury critter. I had mine vector ported which decreases kick by about 25%.It is a very good elk gun.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
To each his own, but I am not that excited over these newer "ultra" cartridges.
You burn a lot more powder and have a huge increase in recoil for a little increase in trajectory and downrange energy.
You would be just as well served with a "regular" 300 mag or 338 mag.
IMHO,
Mike

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
If you really want one, I have a NIB Tikka in 300WSM. It is guaranteed accuracy with 1" by the factory.
At least as nice as a Rem/Win/Browning.
Let me know if you're interested.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
RR,
What model WSM did you get? I bought mine at Walmart, its the Winchester Super Shadow. super shadow It was $388. I didn't like the stock at first,I was going to scrap the stock and put it in a MacMillan, but the factory stock is starting to grow on me.
Check out short mags they have a ton of info on the WSMs.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
Ichy
The .300UM kicks a lot more than a .375 H&H. Plus the UM is a quick mag kick, when the .375 is a rolling, almost shotgun like kick. I'll shoot the .375 all day, I will not shoot an Ultra Mag again.
The Ultra Mag does not make since to me. The .300 Wrby. is about as good as you get when it come to a fast shooting 300. Most shooters can handle the kick with out jumping and you can push a 200 gr. bullet up to speeds that make 400 yd to 500 yd shoots possible for the average shooter.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
monoman,
I didn't even think about the difference in recoil. I haven't shot a .300UM,but have shot my friends .375 Ackely (sp) Improved H&H. It had some pretty stiff recoil, but as you mentioned it wasn't a sharp jab. I just compared recoil #'s from a site I frequent. It had the .300UM at 39.4 ft.lbs and the .375 at 40.8 ft.lbs

Ichy, I got the same as you picked up, only in a walnut stock.
I well put a 6x18x50 scope on it and I well be a happy hunter come this next fall.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
400 to 500 yard shots are possible, but not even realistic for the average shooter. Most dont even have close to the skills required to make ethical shots at those distances. There are guys that have the skills, but lots of people also miss or would lots of game trying.
I find it interesting that a MUCH higher percentage of newer/beginning hunters say they are willing and have the skills to shoot that far, than older hunters and shooters who although have much more skill, refuse to shoot that far at unwounded game.

Re: Winchester .300 aultra mag.
I agree with SeanD. As a bowhunter and rifle hunter, I believe getting close enough to make a high-percentage shot is the true test of a hunter's skill.
