My sons first greenhead.
I remember my first Drake like it was yesterday.
Last weekend I took my son and his best friend out to our favorite goose hunting field.
After several hours of banging at geese I noticed that there was about a zillion ducks flittering around an open spot in the ice , about a 1/2 mile away, in the hallow.
My son has been very interested in getting his first duck. I mostly hunt geese and he has already killed a bunch of geese .
So, I offered to let the two boys to go over and try to get a duck. We had Talkabouts. I stayed with the goose deeks . It was a very windy day ,,maybe 30 mph.. The ducks wanted out of the wind . My son and his friend got set on the down wind side of the landing zone and had the time of thier lives . They shot up two boxes of shells and came back with 4 Mallards, two drakes and two hens. They couldnt stop talking about it ... Two little boys (age 11) a great big world filled with fun and ducks.
My son almost slept with that Drake. He wanted it mounted. He talked about what a beautyful bird it is and how much he loves duck hunting. Victory!!! Im glad I could give him that memory. id. painter

Re: My sons first greenhead.
Congrats Id and little Id
I love looking at the picture of my two boys and their first ducks(wood ducks).
A day to remember.
P.S. My 15 year old son (trainer of our Brit.) printed and put up on his bedroom wall your story of losing your dog.
Sorry about your loss but way to go with your son.

Re: My sons first greenhead.
Seabass,,, That is so cool, about the story.
Last weekend I took a nice double on geese and my pup Morgan made two great retrieves. This was her first Goose fetch and I was absolutly thrilled .
Morgan is now a hunting dog. She points , and will hold it. fetches upland birds, and now geese .... Victory.!!!
However, she still thinks she might just be able to run down a flying goose. After I shoot ,,, If I dont knock any down ,,, it is hard for her to stop chasing them. Hi ho. id. painter

Re: My sons first greenhead.
Great story! Brought back a memory or two or three. Wow!
My dad always told me, "You have to be present to win," and that counts for most things in life. Whether it's showing up for class, showing up for work, or showing up in the goose field, you gotta be there.
Hats off to the boys for being out there in a 30 mph wind and learning how to hunker down and swing the smoke poles. Two boxes of shells, four ducks, and more memories than you could pile in a decoy cart. It doesn't get any better than that!

Re: My sons first greenhead.
Awesome story.
I have been hunting with my son ,for ducks for 3 yrs now. He got his first snow goose last year, banded of course.
We hunted Smith Farms this last tuesday and he got 1 mallard. I was away from the blind, but he was as excited tuesday as when he got his first duck.I got 5 birds and he only got 1 because he had to go register for college. Now, guess who was excited.
Every trip is a new and wonderful time for both of us.

Re: My sons first greenhead.
I always knew fatherhood would be great ,,, but it is much greater than I had ever expected.
Reliving my youth, I had forgotten how much fun growing up was. What an accomplishment it was to get your first duck.
This being a dad ,,,, is so cool. id. p.

Re: My sons first greenhead.
Great story, I thank my dad for getting me into hunting. When your son gets older and has new interests, he will always want to hunt with good ol' dad.
