Coyotes in the rain
After sloshing through the mud this AM in search of coyotes, I am wondering if anyone has had better luck in the rain for 'yotes than I had this morning? I sank up to my knees, dropped my rifle, and almost drowned in a sink hole. Besides that, it was a wonderful day!
But my question still stands. Can you call coyotes successfully in the rain? Let me hear from some of you because I am thinking NOT!

Re: Coyotes in the rain
I get most my yotes in the middle of the day in the summer on a blue bird day
Or on a full moon night after sun down.
Hunting in the rain??? Who would have ever thought about hunting in the rain....

Re: Coyotes in the rain
1 shot one behind my house about an hour ago with my little 17. been raining and snowing most of the day then all of the sudden the sun came out. took my gun and headed out to the back field. before i even got set up or blew a call i spotted him about 100 yards out in the field sitting the sun. he was just setting there on his hind legs. shot him in the chest, he jumped about 3 feet high and ran about 10 feet.

Re: Coyotes in the rain
Thanks for getting back to me on hunting coyotes in the rain. I guess if I want to hunt, I'll have to go rain or shine for the next few days at least. I'll let you know how it goes. :depressed:

Re: Coyotes in the rain
Benn hunting whitetails the last three week with my mzzleloader and have benn hunting on my ground where I usually see many coyotes everytime I go there. Outcome this time of the tear is that I have not seen a one dog nor havr I heard any. I personally feel that they are not yet down in the low country yet, but any snow at all and they will be here and been hungry so look out and happy shooting.

Re: Coyotes in the rain
Well, I have to report my fastest coyote ever. Not fastest running, nor fastest to respond to a call. I'm talking about fastest elapsed time.
We'd been elk hunting all day over in eastern Oregon, and when we got back to the house everyone pulled off their boots and plopped down, except me. The rancher's son had had to stay home and help with the cattle while we were all off hunting, so without making a move for my boots I asked him if he wanted to go get a coyote. He practically leaped over the couch. "Do you know where one is," he asked. "No," I said, "but I sure saw plenty of sign.
We left the house at 4:15 knowing we had very little daylight left, and drove a short two miles to a little knoll overlooking a valley, and slipped out of the truck which was hidden behind a high place. We ducked down and moved out to a little outcropping and set up. I waited my customary couple of minutes, then "caught the rabbit," my term for beginning to squall. I blew two series (two lungs-full) and bingo, there he was, about 80 yards away. A quick yelp, and he presented the classic broadside shot. Tyler closed the deal with his 22-250 and we went down and clipped the ears and headed home. We pulled back into the yard at 4:39. I thought he wuz gonna hug me!
It never gets old.

Re: Coyotes in the rain
I'm out there for predator control, so I leave 'em. In one of the areas I hunt it was not unusual to see 30 head of antelope with 25 or 30 fawns in the spring, then see the same group two weeks later and they would be down to 4 or 5 fawns. The reason? Coyotes. When we got aggressive about thinning them out, the fawn count went way back up. We had to believe we were doing some good.
One ranch where I hunt used to ask you not to shoot coyotes because they ate the sage rats. Then one day the rancher's wife watched a coyote kill a young calf. We're welcome to shoot coyotes now.
There's some hunters out there who feel you should skin them and not let them go to waste. I certainly understand their viewpoint but to me they are not nearly as much a fur-bearer as they are a predator and pest.

Re: Coyotes in the rain
I have been selling coydogs for 25 bucks a pop. You guys need to think about that. Just case skin them and roll them up furside out and freze them If you dont have strechers you can buy them for a 20 bill. I made 3000.00 last winter. if you dont want the hides I'll take them  thats tax free money Boyz

Re: Coyotes in the rain
Gottafish,
Who or where do you sell them? I'm thinking you have to have a fur-takers license to sell them. Is that so?
I'll tell you, that one we got Saturday night had a really nice pelt and it made me wonder. The summer dogs are usually in bad shape, but the winter dogs are a different story. I'm certainly willing to listen.

Re: Coyotes in the rain
I was hopin I wasn't a horrible person in thinking I would just leave it after I shot it....
Selling of the pelts sounds like an easy buck though.....do you need to dry/tan the pelts before freezing? Or just skin em out, and freeze away?
More info on the money making scheme would be appreciated!
Thanks for the info guys!

Re: Coyotes in the rain
Get on-line and go to a trapping supply wharehouse get some wood Not wire streachers for coyote make sure they are the adjustable ones. Then case skin the animal this means hang them upside down and cut around the feet and make a slit down the back side of the leg to the butt hole and then back up to the other leg and repete. now cut to the tail leave the tail on the pelt but get the bone out use vice grips. next peal the pelt down to the frount legs and work them out of the hide then to the head now be very carefull around the ears use your finger to find the ear canal and cut it on each side then work to the eyes and be very carefull around the eyes . now your at the nose when you see the cartalage just cut it off and your done with the skinning. now flesh the pelt get all the fat and meat off and put it on the stretcher fur side in for 24 hour keep in a cool area like the garage after that take the pelt off the stretcher and put it back on fur side out let it hange on the stretcher for at least 4 days and your done. If you have trouble pm me with your number and i'll tell you what to do. cheers Rich
