New gun/toy/project/pic
Well, yesterday I picked myself up a NIB Ruger 10/22 and boy do I have some plans for this....I had some major trigger work done to this. Replaced dang near everything on the end side of her. Even replaced the firing pin with a new titanium firing pin.
What I really like about the trigger job is the auto bolt release, don't have to push in that stinkin little button now to release the bolt. The extended magazine release is really nice also, fits my finger nicely and makes for quick magazine release. Theirs already a really nice trigger pull to it but I was thinking of lowering it to be around 2 pounds of pull?
I'm getting a custom built gray thumbhole Laminated Wood Stock made for it.
Also when I end up with the money I'm gonna be getting a Volquartsen Stainless Steel Snake fluted bold barrel. Right now I have a 22 inch stainless steel barrel for it. As it sits right now its a tack driver, put 3 shots in dang near the same hole at 50 yards!
Well, I have the stock all takin care of, the trigger and all the guts all replaced, thinking I already figured out what barrel I want too...Now I just need to figure out what kinda target scope I'm gonna get for it?

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
I tricked out a 10/22. I worked over the trigger, It now breaks at 2.5 lbs. It has over travel stop on the trigger. Did the bolt release trick, extended mag release. Clerke 20" fluted Stainless bull barrel. Hogue over molded stock. A Burris 3x9x40 sits on top. The gun saw lots of action shooting jack rabbits this past deer season.........

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
1- I would like to see a 2# trigger in a 10-22. Volquarsten(sp) makes cool aftermarket stuff for them. But I never heard of an auto trigger that light.
2- If she already shoots( other than it will look cool, and probably hang better on offhand shots due to increased muzzle weight), why mess with a winner?
3- If you hang a heavy barrel off that light action, do you bed the barrel and float the action( no that is not backwards, bed the barrel float the action)? I doubt the stock action would support a heavy barrel if it were floated. Or do you put a pillar somewhere in the forearm, ala pre '64 and support it that way?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
Mark and the Dog
Its an auto bolt release. You know how you can lock the bolt open? Then when you want to unlock it, to close the bolt you have to pull the action back, then push in that little black button next to your mag release. Then you can slide the action closed.
Well, with the auto bolt release....Lets say you have the bolt locked open. With the auto bolt release all you have to do is pull back on the action and it unlocks it witch then you can slide the bolt closed.
"I would like to see a 2# trigger in a 10-22" Thats why I put a ? at the end of it...Its fine as it sits, but if I could get it a little lighter I would be happy.
Why mess with a winner mark? Cause I want to have something better then what most people have
about your last question....I have not a clue

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
Replace the cheap-e OEM mounting plate and garbage scope mounting rings.
Replace with Leupold bases and rings. For around $40.00 it will improve stability and look tougher…

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
Cool rifles are a good enough reason to rebarrel.
Ask Clark and Tom Volquartson how they bed the heavy barrels. I know several folks with heavy barrel 10-22s that ended up tearing out the bedding after floating the barrel. The action was too spongy to support it. That is why I asked.
You could also bed the first 1/3 of the tube and the action and probably get the correct amount of support out of the deal that way.
Half the fun is in the tinkering.

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
My question is where are you going to find cheap but quality, 20-25-30 round clips??? I have another real trick idea for anyone that doesn't have big clips. You can buy factory 10 rounders for about 10 bucks. Taks the bottom of them to a belt sander till they are flat. Then supper glue them bottom to bottom. Pretty handy. Now your only faced with the problem of having to count you spent rounds to know what you have left. I have a little jig somewhere that I made for drilling the clips. This also works great. You can see at a glance how many rounds you have left. I will try to dig it up. Anyone intrusted could borrow it and drill yours or copy it so all your buddys could borrow it from you. I'll dig around for it and put up a post once I find it. If your intrusted let me know.

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
I also wanted to add that it has a free floating barrel right now....
I shot it a bunch yesterday (Sunday) and she handles very nicely. Showed it off to a few of my buddy's and they love it
Now about my older Ruger 10/22 (made in late 80s). I would like to replace the bolt on it. Just a factory bolt/fireing pin/new spring is what I need.
Does anyone know where I can get one for cheap? The only new bolts I found where 100+comp bolts...Thats just a little to much right now
Also, how about a new scope for my new Ruger? Any ideas on what I should get for it? Any word on BSA or any 22 target scopes?

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
Boedy
Just go out buy a Ruger 10/22mag, replace the barrel with a 17HMR bold barrel...Replace the stock with one of them thumb hole stocks...Put on a good scope and you have a killer set up for under $1000
I've been thinking of buying a cheap (used) Ruger 10/22mag and replace the barrel with a Volquartsen or Green Mountain 17HMR barrel and a a Hogue over molded Ruger 10/22mag heavy barrel stock. That would be SWEET!

Re: New gun/toy/project/pic
I'm pretty dang sure you can do it...all the 17HMR is a 22mag necked down to shoot a smaller gr bullet. The 17 feeds into the same mag as the 22 mag does.
All you need if you have a Ruger 10/22mag is the 17HMR replacement barrel.
