Re: Dog food ?
I use science diet dog food. Why?? First, i like the ratio fat, protein, etc.. Secondly, my dog loves it..And finally, the food seems to make her coat nice and soft.

Re: Dog food ?
I feed Buck, my GSP, purina pro plan. Usually feed the regular adult formula, but mix in the perfomance formula (higher protein+fat) during times of extra high activity.
I used to feed Science Diet but he had itchy skin/ears, and that seemed to go away when I switched to Purina. Maybe something in SD didn't agree with him--hard to say. I think any premium quality food that agrees with your dog is okay.

Re: Dog food ?
I use Diamond Brand dog food. I originally started using it with my labs based on the recommendations of numerous trainers and breeders on another forum. Since then I have been very pleased.
Quality food contents, many different types of food to suit all types of dog, young to old, active to lazy, you name it, they make it. Plus, they don't spend $$$ on marketing like some of the other 'premium' manufacturers and the price reflects it. $20.95 for a 40lb bag - not bad in my book.

Re: Dog food ?
Diamond lamb and rice, one of the best foods on the market, very comparable to natural choice, except the price is about half,as a pro dog trainer i feed a lot of dogs, all the dogs love it and it gives them a great coat.when you buy food a pallet at a time it's alot easier to pony up
$15 a bag than it is to shell out $35-40 a bag.

Re: Dog food ?
Could I ask the same question, but for puppies?
Opinions, nutrition, cost, avaliablity.
Got a new lab pup this weekend and am ignorant.

Re: Dog food ?
Before I got Huck, I did a ton of research into the best dog food. Diamond was the conclusion that I came to. Problem? After his first bowl, he wouldn't eat it again. He'll eat anything else, but he would rather starve than eat the Diamond stuff. I have no idea what his problem is.

Re: Dog food ?
I use Kasco high energy for my pup and diamond for my 8 year old. Them dogs will eat anything so thats not an issue. Both are not big brand names but they keep them healthy and energized. Plus, it's around $20 a 40# bag. I'm happy with both.

Re: Dog food ?
Regardless of what your vet may tell you, feed as much "real" food as possible. By real food I mean the food that you yourself eat for dinner every night. As long as what you eat is healthy food, that is. Most commercial dog food is not that good for your dog.
Another tip: dogs do not need vaccinations yearly. Once every three years is more than enough. Doing it too often it can kill your dog. My 13 year old golden retriever just died recently after having her yearly vaccinations. She managed to survive 4 days afterwards, but she couldn't walk, wouldn't eat, and wouldn't drink water. There's information about all this in the internet, do a Google search and you'll find plenty.

Re: Dog food ?
After trying Bil-Jac, Eukanuba, Nutro and a few others, I've gone to and will stay with Black Gold. I feed the black bag, though I can't remember which formula this is. Its high enough in fat and protein I'm able to feed it to my pup and the big dogs. I feed a bit less of it than the other foods and my dogs seem to thrive. No skin, energy or weight problems since the switch. Plus. . .less food in means, generally, less poop out. A big bonus when living within city limits with four furry friends.

Re: Dog food ?
Costco's (Kirkland brand) is made by Diamond but less expensive. $17-$18 per 40# bag. They have a puppy formula as well as adult chicken/rice or lamb/rice. Dogs love it, good ratios and quality ingredients.

Re: Dog food ?
I too ask questions from other ifisher's and valued their opinions and experiences. I heard alot about Black Gold dog food and reserached it myself and talked to the distributor for Oregon/Washington. It is a great dog food. $21.95 40lbs bag 26/18 fat/protein content. dogs love it. I had my dogs on Science Diet and they had flaky skin. I made the switch and in less than a week their coats were shiny and healthy. They poop less ( more digestable food). Give it a try

Re: Dog food ?
Get a good brand Iam's or science diet. The better foods do not use a lot of fill. Dogs that get wall marts rob roy or what ever thay call it will have to eat twice as much food or more compared to a good dog food. I had some skin and coat problems and switched to Iam's and things cleared up quick. I could leave dog food out for our dog all the time and she would never clean the dish. If you are changing from a cheap brand like a wall mart brand you will find that your dog will eat a lot at first untill she figures out that she does not need as much food. It may take a few days but she will slow down her food intake. Your dog needs good food! j

Re: Dog food ?
I second the Black Gold (lamb & rice) my dog loves it, and her energy has picked up considerably, also when duck season started I noticed after getting into the water and sitting in the blind waiting for the next bird to fall, she would shake and wine (no protein to fight off the cold). Now she doesn't do any of that! I know of others that went to this food source to fix mild skin irritations and they are happy as well.
