My first and last Turkey Hunt
My first and last Turkey hunt was on FT. Hood Texas back in 1980. It was also my first hunt on public land.
I was stood up by the hunting guide that was supposed to take our group into a normally forbidden area called "Impact Area". I guess I was the F.N.G. so I decided to hunt on my own along the western edge of a gas pipeline that runs from one end of the 400 square mile Army post to the other because I always seen turkeys there while on maneuvers.
I went into action, as soon as I got out of the truck, I loaded my gun and BAM! I heard a bunch of turkeys. I gobbled and they gobbled back. I crawled and crawled, I came to the far western edge of the Post and slipped under the fence on to private property.
They kept gobbleing. I kept crawling. I came to a berm on the opposite side of all the noise. My heart was pounding with anticipation of a kill. (You could shoot 6 turkeys there back then) I eased up and over on my (then)flat belly ready to shoot my Ithica 20 GA into the flock and there they were, right next to the barn that was next to the house. Yep, they were domestic turkeys.
No, I didn't shoot. I didn't shoot the dog that chased me back to the fence either. I have lived with this secret for years, now I can get some rest.
