Default Alpha's (Pets)

I have a Male lab pup 13months and a Lab Rott mix Female 4 years old. The Female is the Alpha. Even though she is way smaller she rules the roost. I am wondering if the Lab will ever be dominant! His lack of confidence and dominance is starting to worry me

It is not uncommon for an older female to be and remain dominant over a male that grew up around them. Nick grew up with a smaller Visla/Lab mix named Daisy. Even when he outweighed her by 60lbs, all she had to do was look at him and he was under her power.

His role should change with other dogs and time. I think age has a lot to do with it.

Technically the female is called the beta, I think. Your dog should really start maturing over the next 6 months. My last dog was a total wimp until he was about 18 months, then he went all alfa and wanted to take on every other dog.

Doesn't matter if the dog is male or female. Alpha is a term of social status in the pack. The best alpha dog is the one that behaves the best and listens to you. The alpha dog is good to keep the other animals in line.
