Goose ID Card
Unfortunately, I am not able to make the test happen tomorrow at Sportsmans due to time constraints (not to mention I haven't gotten the tape) HEre is the question:
Do you really need the tape or does a book provide all the info you need? I have hunted with guides twice where I didn't need a permit and I have watched Dave Smiths Video that has some great info on identification within the video.
Any help,

Re: Goose ID Card
I think the video was VERY helpful. In fact I watch it again at the beginning of every season. I know, that's kinda anal, but I would rather spend a few minutes refreshing my identification skills than explaining why I shot a duskey and shut down a whole county.
Mine's loaned out right now or I'd send it to you. Maybe someone else has a copy they could loan. My feeling is - it's worth the money and time.
Remember, we're not just trying to pass the test and get the card. That's the easy part. Our other - and real - aim is to protect duskey's and keep the zone open throughout the season.

Re: Goose ID Card
The best advice I can give you is to study so you believe you can get 100% on the test. Don't take it just to pass, rather to make sure you know how to use every ID method they give you. (Flock patterns and tendencies, neck band colors, bill length for each species, breast color, etc.)
The test is not 'hard', but if you don't study to get 100% you might find several of the questions you get wrong.
I used both the video and book, and found doing both to be more helpful than just one or the other. The book does provide all the info you need and if you study it well, you should pass without any problem. Make special note of the areas I mentioned above when studying.
Good luck.

Re: Goose ID Card
Ditto! Sutdy the book and watch the video. In fact, watch the video at least two or three times. Study the pictures in the book and know them inside and out. And every time you get a chance to watch geese, get the binocs and try to I.D. them. The main thing to remember - when in doubt don't take 'em - unless your on the east side of I5  The duskies still have not figured out that they need to stay on their own side of the freeway.

Re: Goose ID Card
Kingfisher85,
I think most GI Joe's have the video, and if I remember, mine cost me $12. Been a few years ago, though.
You gotta get your permit card pretty soon though. You don't want to miss the ifish goose hunt!

Re: Goose ID Card
Yeah, and "trick" questions...which, IMHO, they SHOULDN'T have! (At least they had some on the test I took, when I took it back about 5 yr.s ago).
If I recall correctly there was one there that had a picture of a MALLARD right in there, flying along with some geese...then they ask you about the geese. This, BTW, is right OUT of their booklet (or was). It's the "clue" that the goose next to it is a Cackler.
But there were other "trick" word questions on some of the tests...i.e. "which of the following is not" etc. Lots of folks don't even see the "NOT"!

Re: Goose ID Card
The video can also be found at local libraries.
The Oregon City library had it when I needed it.
