Default Shed Horns Over The Years

As i sit here i'm getting ready for an early morning foggy costal blacktail/cow elk hunt (dad needs to fill his tag), I thought i would share some sheds with all of you that i have found over the past 2 or 3 years!.....

The big 6X horn is to what i believe is the 8x8 bull my brother killed in first season archery this year. The horn in the picture was found 5/6 years ago and it was only 100 yards "out my back door"

OSU wanted me to show him the shed from the bull and i thought, heck why don't i start a post &

maybe some of you have some that you would like to share as well ??

I always love pondering apoun horns that's for sure!! Mostly when there're on top a head!!

Good luck everyone.

Josh

Those are nice sheds.

I have found a few nice deer sheds but no elk. I found most of my sheds in reprod or thick cover. It's harder to find sheds on the coast.

I pick everything up. So far I have a Beaver Skull, Bear Skull( Partial ), Five or six Deer sheds, Porcupine Skull but no Elk Sheds. Some odds and ends rodents.

I know when deer drop their antlers, but when to the elk loose theirs? I've never found an elk shed either, and it seems like they'd stick out like a sore thumb. I'm thinking that bigfoot's beating me to them.

I'd like to know when Elk shed hunting is good as well. I have a feeling that much like the deer shed season it will heavily interfere with my slammin of winter steelies. Will it?

Here are three sets that were found over the last two years on my old tree farms.

The outer 6x6 set I found lying on the side of the road roughly 5 feet apart. Tough find

The second set, the 4x4 was found lying in the middle of the road in about 4 inches of snow with the tops crossed. My co-worker found those.

The inner set, a 6x6 as well was found the furthest apart. One shed was found on an old road grade; the match was found about 30 yd. away in a meadow.

The two 6 pt. sets were found in the same year, same farm. The 4 pt. set was found on the other side of the valley a couple of years before.

Since then I have only found two other elk sheds. To those who are wishing to find them in the woods: good luck I have co-workers that have worked in the woods 30+ yrs and found like 4. They are extremely tough to find and the only thing I can guess is that they're dropping them in clearcuts while they eat! Foresters I've talked to have mentioned that their planters usually find a couple a year. But again, it's hit and miss.

Where's your old tree farms ?!? LOL .....

Hey nice sheds guys!!

Did you get my pm OSU ??

And you would think they would stick out like a soar thumb , but they DO NOT!!!...

They are very hard to find in the coast range. Slal AL all 5 feet deep hides horns pretty darn good.Found a lot of mine in dark timber and mostly in my favorite place "reprod".

OSU dang those were some very lucky shed pick-ups!!! Dangit man!!

I'd kill the outside bull with-out a thought!!

Keep your eyes to the ground and keep hiking! Cover lot's and lots and lots of ground!! You'll find 'em!

Didn't get anything from you. Just email me at osulogger@comcast.net

The one and only elk shed that I've found in the brush was in about 25 yr. old reprod. It's about the only place a guy can find bone because there's nothing on the ground except for branches

Nice sheds Screamin'!

I keep looking at your sheds from the first post and I gotta say that the 5 pt. on the left side of the picture is a toad. Must have been a revert because that base is nuts. The middle shed is very unique in itself as well; very cool! And I also noticed that down on the floor is a tiny little elk shed, maybe a 3 or a 4 pt??? That's a cool find in itself!!!

Here is another one that I found this past spring; my only one to date that I have actually found "in the woods." The rest being roadside sheds of course.

The first couple of pictures of it show it lying as I found it. I hung the pink ribbon there because I found it while working and ran back to the rig to get the camera LOL

The last picture of it shows it lying next to the 8 pt. shed I have. It has some longer tines but nowhere near the mass of the 8 pt. Oh, the 8 pt. was lying on the side of the road too, did I mention that before?! LOL

The really weird thing about this 5 pt. was that when I picked it up it appeared to be last years shed because the rosette was brown in color and there was minimal fading on the shed. On the carry out to the pickup I noticed this foul smell, and didn't think much about it until I got back to the truck and set the antler on the tailgate. The dang thing was bleeding! It bled for almost 2 weeks as well; couldn't bring it inside because as soon as you set it straight up, it would bleed out of a whole in it. It finally stopped and resides on my desk at work now.

Oh and you were mentioning about having the 6 pt. shed on your entertainment center??? My 8 pt. rests on the floor in front of the tv and serves at the conversation piece for the room much to my wife's disapproval

HAHA you lucky dog ,finding them damn horns on the side of the road like that!!!....

I could walk my butt off all day and pull every muscle in my body and never find one!

If that 5x horn stunk and was bleeding then it was not long before it was shed when you found it!!!....

Dangit man i love the darkness of the horns!! Looks to me as if they could be out of the same gene-pool!

Who do you log for ?

The 8 is very awesome!...

The only horn i EVER found on the side of the road was the huge 5 point i have pictured by it's self!!...Was scouting an srea in july this year that i know very well and I actually walked by this horn the day before i SAW/found it.... So i found it in July and it still has beautiful color for that late in the year and being in the open sunlight!....

I belive you might be right about a revert tho, cus his base and the weight of the horn is just crazy!...I have always thought that. We found that one and the one next to it the 6 point (with the palm) only 50 ft from each other. (wintering bulls)

All the bulls i have sheds to i have filmed several times , except the big 6!

This one is a 7 point this year, (he finally grew his second brow on his left side!..Awesome this is , is he has this palm on both sides!!.. snuck to with-in 25-30 yards of him and could have shot him a hundred times. I did, but only with my camera!!! Early august he was with 2 other large bulls and 5 cows ! All bulls hard horned by August 6th.

I have ONLY found left side sheds for elk!! Never any rights!

Here is a better pic of the burrs ,look at the stob that the big 6x left on this one, must have had a head ache for a while after words !!!

Those two elk sheds were found about 80 miles apart; not quite from the same gene pool. I need to dig out a photo of the 8 pt. and the 6 pt. set I have and show them side by side. Those two might actually be related. They were found across the canyon about 2 miles from one another.

I actually do layout for a fairly good sized private timber company down in Eugene. I used to work for an even bigger firm north of here before that.

We're going to have to hook up for some bone hunting now Screamin'! You got some nice horns, I really like the color in your sheds.

Shoot me an email; it appears we're the only two carrying this thread along. I know sooslaw will jump in here and I'm surprised Rooseybulls hasn't peeped up!

I don't have any pics of my elk sheds. Here is a pic of deer skull I found this spring. Elk sheds seem really tough to find compared to deer. But it's still fun lookin.

Traks,

I've wanted to go east for the last two years now, but I have no clue where to go and no clue where to start :depressed:

I had cutter for one of my logging sides that went to Sled Springs every year; couldn't convince the guy to take me. I think he was afraid I'd get more bones then him. LOL

tried east before, not much fun. people lined up on the highway waiting for the herds to drop. My main excuse to hit the brush for sheds is a great scouting tool.

I just pack them home and toss them in the yard for decorations, they dont last long but I seem to keep up with the decay process.

heres some from the garage, all found within 15 miles(as a crow flies) of the ocean. this picture was taken a year ago so I have some new additions that aren't present, plus the ones I made lamps out of. The bucks in the back were both cougar kills that I found.

BoE, are those coast range or east side horns???? If those were coast range bull horns, I'd be throwing them in the house, esp. that big 6 pt.

Those are East side horns for the most part. Just yard ornaments

I know a guy in Tillamook who hunts sheds very hard. He has several piles of antlers taller than him. Stacks and stacks of antlers around his house.

I looked for the buck a total of 12 hours within 3 searches over the course of 2 weeks and could never locate him.OSU I love your european mounts you have on your skull finds, they are real nice. You have a nice collection. I will try to put together some of my more unusual sheds tonight and get a pic, some bucks with alot of character, and the worlds smallest elk shed!

The only shed I have ever come I across, I didn't see. One of my hunting buddies who is newer to the sport and I were still hunting through an area and had just started in. As we were splitting up, he wistle and i look over to see him holdin up a 3pt blacktail shed. I walk over to check it out and tell him to look around for the match to it. As I am checking it out, he walks off 10' and picks up a 3pt Elk shed that I had stepped over to get to him. Go figure.

Here is a few pics of the better two finds I have had in the last few years.

I stained the 3 point to make it look better. It was pretty green and mossy when I found it.

Antlers shed, horns do not.
No that's not true. Don't forget the pronghorn does shed it's horns every year.

I guess people like the word horn better than antler. Hence fork "horn" and "Any horns on those deer?" Sort of like when a pick-up gets called a gun. Have I put anyone to sleep yet?

Now now Josh, I don't think it looks that messy! At least it's bones all over the desk instead of paper. LOL

Here are some more blacktail sheds. I find these more then I do elk sheds of course. Still haven't been able to pattern them either, although I have good luck in reprod

A couple of heads my old office crew and I found. I found the two middle ones, another guy found the other two. I made all the mounts:

Here is how I found one of those bucks as it laid:

Another weird looking skull that was found by a co-worker:

My first matched set of blacktail sheds; they were found about 10 feet apart on two sides of a big cedar tree. Looked as if he'd knocked them off using the tree:

A couple of sheds from one day of looking. As they laid pictures:

Some of the sheds that hang on my folks back deck. The one in the upper left hand corner was the first one I ever found and started the madness from there on!

Here's a shed I found with sliverpicker at our rattling grounds this past spring. The neat thing about this shed is that he was able to snap a picture of this buck during the rut the fall before he shed this horn:

My first elk sheds and my only matched set as they laid on the side of the road before I touched them:

Some random shed:

And last but not least, a find one of my co-workers had to drag out of the brush and bring back to the office:

Hopefully this didn't bore too many of you

Super Fluke:

I find most of them at work. I go out on weekends during the spring time and see what I can find then, but most of them are work finds. Except for the one I found with TK, they're all Coast Range sheds found from Forest Grove to Roseburg.

seahawk, thats a magnificent find! my collection doesnt have very many roseys, 7-8. mostly blacktails. her is my best buck, found in my honey hole thats too grown up now

this

these are some with character, a heavy palmated shed, and one with a star on top, been seeing a few of these around lately

[url=http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c58/sooslaw/palm.jpg

these two i found on the same trail and what is so unique is the eyeguards coming right out of the base, definitely the same genetics, i also found one near there that was a spike with an eyeguard at the base as well.

and this shed i though was a vertabrae until i picked it up. the worlds smallest elk shed??

they also can become clutter on my entertainment system as well. Fiance hates it!!

NR Seahawk Boy,

WOW  That set is incredible; very nice find for sure! Maybe someday I'll see a bull like that....

Sooslaw, good to see some pictures! My wife banished almost all of my sheds to the garage except for the 8 pt and the one I found with TK. It's only a matter of time..... LOL

Screamin Bulls,

They are a roosevelt set. I saw just a tip of one side sticking up through the brush when I was shed hunting one day. The other side was at least a couple hundred yards away. I had them scored, and being conservative on the width measurement, it was a 340 class bull. My buddy hunts the area we found the sheds, and to my knowledge, this bull is still out there.

SF,

I know a number of people that find bone over in that part of the world, but you're going to be fighting a lot of brush in that country too! Basically I've found anywhere that you see critters, you're going to have a good shot at finding some bone. You might have to look hard for it, but it's there. Walk edges, trails, old roads, fencelines when applicable and ridges.... all good places to start.

When I get home tonight, I'll post one of a big 7pt that one of my old cutters found outside of Tillamook... beautiful shed even with the chewing that occurred on it.

So shed hunting is starting to catch me. Two years ago I found a huge spike elk shed, like 35 inches tall, with an eyegaurd. I'm sure it was a 2X3, cause you can see a weird knot where a third point should've been started. Anyway, so far this year while hunting, I've found three deer sheds (2 pt, 3 pt, 4pt) and one 5 pt Rosie shed. Talk about a good year relative to past years! Anyway, a lot of them are pretty green, which I guess adds character, but I'd sorta like to clean them up a little... suggestions? Toothbrush and water... some cleaning agent? Toothpaste even? Thanks for the help and awesome pics, TOC.
