Coyote Hunting.........
I have been looking into Coyote Hunting for a couple weeks and it looks like a kick!
Anyway, i am going up to the coast of Oregon in a couple weeks to do a little scouting and i wanted to try out some coyote hunting as well....
My question is for anyone who has Coyote Hunted, what calls should i get? I have been doing some research and i have read alot of people like the Circe calls.......
Also, any tips or anything would be of great help!
Thanks

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
Foleys
Look at the electronic callers they work. But I think if you learn to use a mouth call it would be better. I am learning the mouth call but it does take a lot of air. My wife says I am such an old wind bag it should be easy to learn  Went hunting 12/6/03 out of Madras in the National Grass Lands. I only have a 2 wheel drive so I couldn't go where I wanted to hunt. No Luck today.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
Exactly what does a dead rabbit sound like? I always thought they got kinda quiet as they approached room temperature.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
We just spent some time talking about that very thing, but it slipped to page 2. Here's the link to that thread.
They're starting to howl now. I heard two howling to each other tonight off my front step. IT IS SOOOOO COOOL!!

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
When I was a kid the local trapper got rid of a coyote for us, that was eating our geese. He found where its trail was, it left tufts of hair on the fence where it went under. Then he staked out a spot downwind and uphill and did rabbit calls with his mouth and hands. Coyotes are very wary, I'd think if you were targeting them it'd be a matter of having a stakeout in the right place for hours and hours, or just happening upon one by chance, usually at a distance where they've already spotted you and are running.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
Open reed calls are hand held. Diaphram calls are placed in the palett of your mouth and tend to be a little more difficult to learn to blow. The open reeds are very easy to blow and get the hang of the basics quickly.
If you want a diaphram go get a double reed turkey call. I have used them with good results.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
Shot my fair share of coyotes over the years. Kinda gave it up when my daughters and wife would not talk to me after going after them on weekends. I really enjoyed hunting them. I always used a hand call (rabbit). Used a recorder a couple times. Really a good way to go but not nescessary. The recorder can be setup away from you making it easier to target the dogs. I got eight dogs one weekend over by Diamond, OR back in the early 70's. Really don't have to go that far anymore. Lots of coyotes in the coast range and down in the W. Valley. I still get the urge really bad to pop one whenever I see one. They are clever, tough, great nose and you better be one of two things, One heck of a shot and or be concealed really well. Using a hand call for coyotes I have called in farm dogs and pet dogs from surrounding areas. When you hunt them on frozen ground, thats what gets your adrenalin running, hearing them run on that frozen ground. A little tip is don't overcall, call a couple times then listen for a while. I used to give an area a couple toots then wait, watch and listen for 15 to 20 minutes. If nothing, move on. But always be prepared for one hiding close by when you move. They are stealthy creatures and I have shot a lot of them thinking I was in the wrong spot only to get up to move and one breaks his cover very close to me. If you want to save the pelts us a 22-250 or 223. Little hole going in and not much damage coming out. Just remember, always wear rubber gloves (thick) when you field dress them. They eat rabbits and a very old trapper told me long ago that rabbits can carry Bubonic Plague. I didn't know for sure if he was right or not but I always wore heavy rubber gloves after that just to be careful.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
P1 - Jack Rabbit
P2 - Cottontail
P6 - Baby Rabbit
Go with the P2 or the Weems Wildcall. IMHO

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
foley,
I have use of an electronic call with some homemade tapes from some very good coyote hunters. These guys have killed hundreds of dogs with these tapes. If you would like we could go out and give it a try some day.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
My caller consists of a sony sports walkman(cassette) , 30 feet of speaker wire to a Radio Shack outdoor speaker. It has decent volume, not as loud as some of the newer ones. but is cheap and works. I like the idea of having the speaker away from me. Plenty of tapes available. Some day I will upgrade . Look on :
www.wingsupply.com they have some deals on tapes, calls, callers.

Re: Coyote Hunting.........
You want to have some real fun!!! Shoot me a note and I would be happy to sell you a rooster to use as live bait. Just stake one out in open country on a short line, give a few calls, yank on the rope a little bit and get ready for some action!!! Then all you need to do is be sure to shoot the dog before he has a chance to ruin your bait. I have excess roosters(hard time getting any eggs out of them) all the time and they usually only bring 6-9 bucks at the auction. I have 15 heading to the auction next week. If you want one for the weekend, shoot me a note and arrange for pickup. If anyone wants one in the future, let me know ahead of time and I'll keep one around. Not 100% sure it is legal to use bait for predators but sure is fun!!! Anyone have info on it???
