Coyotes are a lot smarter than we are. They live by the creed, "Sleep 'til you get hungry, eat 'til you get tired." No 9 to 5 for these guys.

They are active all hours of the day and most of the night. Watch 'em sometime. They will just plop down in a hollow and nap for 6-10 minutes, then raise up, look around, and nap again. Pretty soon they get bored or hungry and they get up and trot off looking for their next meal.

One of the reasons I like to hunt in the morning or evening is I can often use the rising/setting sun to my advantage. But the critters themselves are out and about all hours.

Congrats on picking up so much land to hunt. I am deeply impressed with the way you've gone about it. You are sowing the seeds of many fun hours out in the field.

Default Yet another coyote question!

OK, I promise this is the last question, for a while, on coyotes on the West Side of the Cascades.

While scouting, quite successfully, for more places to hunt, one of the landowners said he sees most of the coyotes on his property at 3:00 to 4:00 in the afternoon! Is this typical? Does anyone out there hunt "dogs" in the mid afternoon timeframe? I always hunt in the early AM or late PM and never gave any thought to the mid day hunt.

Any observations would be greatly appreciated as I now have developed over 1000 acres of combined property that I can hunt!

Skein,

Again, thanks for your clear and concise response. I agree with you that in the AM/PM timeframe one could use the sun to his/her advantage, but that I might get a shot at anytime depending on Mr. Coyote's whim!

I really hit the jackpot yesterday while seeking permission to hunt. I met a landowner who has over 500 acres of huntable land, all with good coyote cover, and got a "YES" when I aproached him for permission. I now feel that I have a variety of places to hunt with each offering a good chance of success.

Good hunting,

Rusty

Hey Rusty, Not that Skein needs any backing but he is spot on!!! As usual. One ole fella where I grew up usually hunted dogs in the PM just because he thought they were hungrier. I prefer the AM but mostly for my convenience and use of the sun, and to have light for tracking or whatever other thing that could go wrong.

Good hunting!!!

Elkaholic,

Thanks for the reply to my inquiry. Skein really sounds like the guru when it comes to coyote hunting. I have hunted them for a few years, but am still learning the ropes.

As noted in my post, I have a "ton" of good, local property where I have gained permission to hunt. The problem seems to be that the "dogs' are well scattered. The landowners report seeing or hearing 'yotes sporadically, but with increased frequency this time of year. So with any luck, I'll start getting some decent action in the winter months to come. At least, I hope so!
