Concealed carry permit.
Where to go for classes... Pros and cons. All opinions welcome, and appreciated.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Local gun club, gun retailer, or sheriff's (PD)office can point you in the right direction. There are different classes you can take. Some are a one nighter, other's require you to show you can handle your weapon at a range before you get your cert.
I've had mine for 10 or 12 years. Funny thing is I rarely carry. It's a nice convienence to be able put in the glove box or console and not have to worry about it.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
I was really eager to get my concealed permit, but after I took the class I realized what a huge responsibility it is. It took me a couple of years after I took the class to submit my appplication, but I did. I am glad I did. I only carry while on trips or in remote areas.
I found my concealed class in the Nickle Adds. I took my class in Klamath Falls.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
I took mine over at the Northwest Shooters Supply.(I think thats what it's called) Its the gun store over on Lombard. It was a one night class and it was very informative, i think it cost $35. I can't remember the instructors name, but he was former Clackamas County sheriff. He knew his stuff.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
I took mine at fishermans marine OC last month. 35 bucks and takes about a hour. Good and informative. The class is good enough for applying for your ccl but I plan to take a more detailed class at the Clackamas County public safety range off 82nd. I will have my wife join me so she is also savy to gun safety.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Tag a Long, check your local Gun Store, I took mine at Ricky's Sporting goods in Lebanon, I have taken my gun with me almost every day since I got mine I have rentals and need the security, plus when I travel I keep one in RV and haven't had any problems, Don't go to CANADA, but all in all it give me a little more peace of mind, after being broke into twice in the last year might even use it. Well.....
"Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms , shall not be infringed."
Buying into the permitting process just strengthens the anti gun crowd.
Push for a carry law like they have in Vermont.

Keta....
I fully agree with the right to bear arms. But I am also a strong beleiver in the permitting process... do we want convicted felons and people who have NO CLUE how to handle a gun legally carrying? No.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Felons should be in prison, for a long time.
If I feel I need to carry, I pack out in the open. In KF it isn't a problem but I don't think I would do it in Portland.
I'm wary of arming people that "haven't got a clue", but who is to be the one that judges whether you can or can't pack. Concealed carry laws are a step in the right direction though. I just have problems with having to get a permit for a right. I have done FBI record checks, for work and my FFL, so I don’t have problems with privacy issues. It just doesn’t seem right.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
I didn't think about some responsibility aspects of the carry permit until I had it. For instance, if I just toss a pistol into the glove box/console; the next brain-dead, scabby meth freak that clouts my car goes to his next victim as an armed robber. We have had four cars clouted in the last five or six years.
Buying in to the permitting process may strengthen the anti-gun crowd, but not buying into it and still carrying will strengthen your lawyer's retirement fund. Sort of the classic conundrum, whether to vote your conscience or vote your pocketbook.

Keta, open carry isn't legal in Portland or Beaverton.
To others considering traveling with you Oregon ccl check the laws in each state as they are all different. Packing.org will give you all the answers for packing.

Huh? I got my card and didn't have to take any class. Just filled out the application, offered up fingerprints, a picture and some cash...all at the local sheriff's office.
Was I supposed to take a class?

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Took mine at Keith's Sporting Goods in Gresham.Took about 2 hours for the class and 4 months for Multnomah County to do the rest.I agree we should not have to have one in that it is a right to bear arms but it just makes for a lot less hassle having one. Also shows we are good little boys and girls for getting one legally and following all the requirements for getting one.I agree that we should not leave a gun in any vehicle that might get broken into, just dont need those unsavory types having guns.

Packing.org is a fairly thorough site with a lot of info for each state.
I beleive that each gun show out at the expo holds permit classes too.
If you decide to carry: get some training, practice often, practice with what you are going to carry!
Main places around OR offer training. Check around - classes are usually booked full months in advance.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Mello-Yello: If you didn't have to take the class, its because you had some other certification (DD14, etc.) that is accepted in place of the class.
Last I checked, Oregon has 95,000 CHL holders. CHL holders have proven to be upstanding, law-abiding citizens - clueless or not. When an Oregon LEO runs your license, he/she will see if you possess a CHL, and such information is greeted with a sigh of relief as it means you're a checked out "good guy".
I really advise that anyone contemplating taking a class pay attention to the handfull of really good classes. Why? Nearly any FFL dealer can give a course, and a lot of CHL courses suck - simply a way to make a quick $35. One of the very best courses is offered at the:
Clackamas Community College Public Safety Training Center
www.cccpstc.org
12700 SE 82nd Ave., Clackamas, 650-6677.
Open 11 am to 8 pm daily.
The center offers a number of package specials that include gun rentals, target time, ear and eye protection and ammunition.
The drop-in fee is $20; private tutorials start at $39.99 for half an hour.
Membership fees range from $75 to $159 per person per year.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Uh, is this hunting or LIG
The documentation is required, like said above you must have had some other sort of qualifying document ?? When you submit your application you will file your course information, if that course instructor is no longer licensed at the time you apply it is void.
I took my class in Newberg, they used the in door range and required you to fire 25 rounds from varying positions which was fun and added some defensing thinking to when/when not to shoot in the process. Many course require nothing, including discharging you weapon. I think there should even be a minimum level of competency demostrated, but I am sure the NRA would have none of that.

If you served in the Armed Forces and were honorably discharged you normally won't be required to take the course. You will however, have to provide proof.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
dla,
I simply don't know what to say. I've never been certified in anything pertaining to firearms, well, other than taking my hunter's safety course some...35 years ago. I'm sitting here looking at my CHL right now, and I swear on my grave I have never taken any kind of firearm training course...ever.
I only got the permit so I didn't have to worry about forgetting to have my handgun in view and risking a fine.
I obtained one in WA when I lived there too, and it required virtually nothing but a background check and a few buck$.
I dunno...

In my class there was. If an unarmed person can get out of a room ,like jumping out a window and isn't a threat you can't shoot him but if she is armed and coming towards you and you feel your life is at risk and can prove it legaly your o.k. ,remember civil lawsuits! Thats how thay got O.J.

I had my carry permit in Indiana, which I let lapse before I realized that Oregon recognized Indianas permit. I used to put my gun on like it was part of me. I also think that open carry should be the way to go. Thanks for the info!!

Re: Concealed carry permit.
I agree with taking a qualified class to gain your concealed carry permit. I took a course from a local gun club instructor and it was really worth my time. I have been around handguns, rifles and shotguns my entire life. Still learned alot from the class. Also, take the carry gun with you and practice with it. A few of the people who took the class when I did were not up on firearms at all. They were all eyes and ears during the lectures and all smiles when it came time to actually shoot targets. Having a concealed weapon comes with a greater responsiblity. I know that I take my training serious and practice as much as possible time permitting. For those out there contemplating gaining a carry permit please take a qualified training program from certified instructors.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but hasn't there been some new regulations stating that your permit(for the state that you reside in) is good in all other states? If so how does Alaska rate? As of 7-15-03 residents do not need a permit for a concealed weapon!

My bet is you have had yours for awhile and got it while I think the first name is "Mike"?? was Sherrif back some 12 to 15 years ago.
I used to peddle shooting sports goods over in Coos Co. back then and he would give them away like candy.
Not my call to say whether that was good or bad, it just was.
BTW, I got to know him pretty well after he retired and was working, or at least hanging out a lot, at a gun store over there. Pistol River gun shop was the name of it. He is a good guy, just not exactly "by the book", if you will.
As a point of information. The Oregon School Boards Association recently passed a resolution asking that the state give each county the right to decided if the CCP has to be honored on School property. I have not heard where it is going but expect we will hear more about it as time goes on.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Straydog,
Actually, no. I just got mine in Oct 2002, but yeah, I know who you're talking about. The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure they accepted my hunter's safety course as 'state approved' training ( I took it back in the early 70's)....
I don't pack...though at times I consider it, depending on where I'm going and what I'm doing. I mainly got it so that I could pack if I chose to, and so I didn't risk getting in trouble if I had my handgun in transit and forgot to keep it in plain view....
Here's a pretty good link that discusses Oregon Law...

Re: Concealed carry permit.
Can someone answer this for me? Coincidentally I spoke with my father today and he was in a rush to get his permit renewed. He said that as of the first of the year the state was going to discontinue offering concealed weapons permits?????
My old man is usually pretty up to snuff on things, and I did not question where he heard this, but he can sometimes read a little more into things that what is intended.
Anyone know if the permit system is going to be discontued?

Sounds like a rumor to me. This is the first I have heard about it. It isn't readily availible on any of the State websites.
Ask him where he heard this.

Re: Concealed carry permit.
The State doesn't issue permits - each county sheriff does. So unless your Sherriff has decided to hold off till next year for some reason, there shouldn't be a delay.
I think you can read about the process in ORS 162 (166?).

Re: Concealed carry permit.
dla is correct Only the local sheriff's office of the county for which you reside can issue you a CHP.
However, the state has authority over the sheriff's office to stop all permit renewals and new permits should it choose to do so.
I've heard no such rumors, but will try to follow up on it as I have some pretty close "connections" with the local Sheriff.
I'll letcha'll know what I learn...

OK, I talked with the individual that issues permits in Coos County.
No discussions whatsoever of messing with concealed handgun permitting...
