Re: New to Ifish-Intro/Story
Welcome CryWolf, I think you will enjoy yourself here. Thanks for your story about Drano. I was glad to see you give up that tidbit about the prawn spinner. Thanks i will add that to my collection of rigs for that piece of water. I have had good luck there with hardware when magwarts would not do the trick. jr

Re: New to Ifish-Intro/Story
Thanks for the welcome. This is a great website. The amount of information that people share is super. I hope to be able to share as much as I can. I also hope to get my 5 year old out this springer season. She has been asking me when she can go. It excites me that she is interested in going. Thanks again.

New to Ifish-Intro/Story
I first want to start by saying Hi to everyone. I have been a lurker on Ifish for quite some time but thought I should take the plunge and introduce myself. I love to fish for both spring and fall salmon during the year and also do a little summer steelheading on the Columbia. I don't get out that much as I have two children, a (soon to be)3 year old and a 5 year old (both girls) that keep me quite busy. When I do get out it is really enjoyable for me.
My story goes back a couple of years to springer season. My fishing partner and I were wanting to go to Drano lake and fish as we had heard of people doing well there. I had never fished there but had heard of many fish being caught on Magwarts. A friend of mine had given me a tip on what to use (something other than Magwarts) so I was determined to atleast give his tip a try. On the day we fished Drano we started out using what my friend had suggested. After a couple of hours of no success we switched to trolling Magwart as we had seen a number of boats hooking fish on them and of course when you see others having success with something that you have you have a tendency to want to change to it. As it was we spent the rest of the trolling Magwarts with no success.
A couple of days later I called this friend of mine and related our experience. He asked me how long we had used his tip. He then proceeded to tell me that we had not stuck with it long enough and that his experience had been that at sometime during the day if there were fish there they would take what we were offering. I determined to give it another try.
The following Monday we arrived at Drano around 8:30 in the morning. Again we began trolling using what my friend had recommended. Again we observed boats hooking fish on Magwarts. By about noon we had not hooked a fish and I was beginning to think we should have changed to Magwarts. As our boat rounded the corner where we were parallel with the bank fisherman by the bridge my partners rod buckled. We proceeded to boat our first springer. As we looped around and made our next pass up by the bridge(where the major concentration of boats are for those of you who have been there) my partners rod buckled again and we boated our second springer of the day. My partner was done for the day. To make a long story short, in the next hour I boated two fish. All caught using my friends tip. We hooked all of them up near the bridge. Both of mine were hooked as we turned parallel with the bridge. By 2:00PM we were limited and heading home. It was an exciting day.
As I said, I don't get out often because of the kids and to get out and spend a day on the water is great but to get fish is an added bonus.
The tip my friend gave me was to use a prawn spinner. He recommended pink prawns. He also recommended a #4 Cascade blade in hammered bronze. He said if I could to go out about 13 pulls but if not(and we couldn't up by the bridge with the close proximity of boats) to just drop down to the bottom and reel up 3 cranks. A key he said was to get a good roll on the prawn by putting a bend in it. We followed his recommendation to the letter on that day. Needless to say on that day he was right. I think confidence in something has alot to do with whether it will work for you.
The friend who gave me the tip was Eric Linde. I have known Eric since he was an Assistant Manager at Fishermans Marine before they moved to Delta Park. He's a great guy and doesn't mind sharing information.
As I said, I don't get out on the water often but I hope to see you out there. Be safe and tight lines.
