Default Homemade duckboat info??

I am curious if anyone here has built a duckboat? I'm interested in both a rowboat or powerboat. A two man double-ender type rowboat, plywood construction.
I've seen plans for (I dont remember who) a broadbill, or a pintail powerboat which were btwn 12'-14' or something similar. Sneakbox....
Maybe Woody could shed some light?

Try a Google search on wood boat plans. You'll find several plans for duck boats.

I am working up one that is made of milk jugs and an egg beater with a car battery.

Going to be the duckjug 2005.

I've seen the plans on the net. The broadbill and pintail boats I referred to were from a boatbuilders website.
Does anyone know of a boatbuilder, or craftsmen that has pursued this project.
I'm not a carpenter, nor do I have 'good' woodworking skills or the tools, but maybe with a set of plans, someone to I may refer to, and the help of my father (who has the skills), I might jump into this.

Thank you all for your replies.

I,ve built many duck boats of different designs as well as sail and ice boats. It is real important to decide where you intend to do most of your duck hunting when it comes to picking a design. It is not that difficult to even design your own boat. Lately there have been many new construction techniques that would help building your project boat easier. If you would like to just talk a bit more PM me with a phone number and a good time to call you . don duck

These guys have several models of duck boats, and their prices for plans are good. I know a lot of these boats (esp the duck hunter) have been built, and they look very good. The refuge forums have quite a few pictures of completed ones.

Lots of info, plans & kit boats out there.
The kits are not particularly cheap.
A Mallard Marsh Rat (local made) or a kayak might be easier and cheaper. Or you could just pick up a good use aluminum flat bottom and do what many of us have done and built a blind for it.
Personally I think a 2nd hand kayak is about the cheapest one person duck boat. Even if it's the wrong color, it's nothing a couple cans of the right paint can't handle.
PM Waterfowling101, he's got a nice "Ducky" kayak.
If you don't get to your project this year, keep in mind the waterfowling Festival in Scapoose the next summer.
Lots of good ideas there.
Also check past "Duck Boat" threads on here.

Built a Broadbill in '79 (marine plywood and fiberglass) and never regretted it. Used it with 20 and 15 hp outboards.
Rides like a hydroplane. Is extremely light and draws very little water. Easy to build.

Punched two holes in it on the same trip on Cyprus knees while living in Arkansas. Patched it with ducktape and got home. Was easy to repair.

Used it on Tillamook and Netarts Bays and on the lower Columbia and on tribs of Cheasapeake Bay and never got into trouble altough had it out in some pretty scary stuff. One guy saw me out on Netarts from his house during a bad blow and called us the two guys on the surfboard. Kept decoys bags on the deck and everything that came over the deck hit the bags and never took serious water in the cockpit. Far safer boat than my son's 15' Alumacraft jon boat. Many times had three guys and a dog, plus decoys.

Have three different blind setups. Standard, short and layout. In VA I would put goose shells on the deck and surround the boat with silouhettes on stakes (shallow water)and lay against a backboard while covered in camo and have geese within 10 yds of the boat.

If you build one you might want to see mine as I made some design changes which have worked out well for me. Just PM me and we'll arrange a time.

I've a 12 foot plywood driftboat hand made from a kit and glassed on the bottom that I've been trying to peddle. Send me your e-mail and I'll shoot you some pictures.

I'm going to order a frame kit from Clark boats for either the 14' Broadbill http://www.clarkcraft.com/cgi-local/shop...;item=933012352

or the 14' Black BrandtIII http://www.clarkcraft.com/cgi-local/shop...;item=932732428

Now is research and decision time on which grade marine plywood I will use and hardware decisions ( cleats, handles...)

This is going to be a project between my father, myself, and my 15 yr. old son. I will try to post step by step construction photo's. I feel like a little kid.

Here is a link to th eplans for the Pintail. If you search the site there is other plans for duckboat type rigs.

I printed out the plans for the pintail a year ago but have yet to start building.
