Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have a Remington model 700 30-06 that my dad bought in 1962, he was 12 years old. He used this gun most his life and killed 21 elk with it. He gave it to me when I turned 12 and got my hunting license. I killed my first elk with it when I was 13, a spike. When I was about 19, I left this rifle in my pickup behind the seat, guess what somebody broke my window and helped themselves to my rifle.
I learned a hard lesson, I had never wrote down the serial number and the police pretty much told me there was nothing they could do. 3 years later I was in a local gun shop and there was my rifle for sale in the gun rack. I bought it back. I now keep this gun as my spare hunting rifle, I plan to give this rifle to my son, when he is old enough to hunt(he's only five months old).
This year I plan on getting it reblued as most of the blueing has long since been rubbed off, installing a new scope, and a new stock. The original stock got broke years ago when my dads horse decided to rub against a tree.
Well thats my story, sure would like to hear yours.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
You were lucky to find yours. I had a Remington 1903A3 30-06 ackley improved that I got when I was 11 years old. I had it till I was bout 25 when it was stolen by my cousin when he moved from my parents house. It was the gun I loved more then any other, not because it was a "really" nice gun because it was ugly as a mud fence but it was the gun that had killed more deer then any other gun id seen besides dads, and it was my first rifle. I was qiute mad and if I ever see my cousin again,,, lets just say he wont be happy with me. I always go to the gun shows and look at all the 03A3's just hoping that someday I will see it. I did have the serial# wrote down but after it was gone I couldnt find it anywhere.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have a little single shot .22 that My dad learned to shoot with, and all his brothers and sisters shot with. My dad was born the year after this gun was made (it is a Remington Model 33) and My dad was born in 1934.
This gun was the gun that my dad taught my mom to shoot back in their courtship in the late 50's.
It was also the gun that I learned to shoot and hunted many big grey squirrels with in the foothills of SW oregon.
A few years back, I shot it with my girl in our courtship. It is probably of more romantic significance than anything else.
It is leaning in my closet now.
It has been shot so many times, that the rifling is wearing smooth, so i only fire it once in a blue moon anymore.
Perhaps some day I'll teach my nieces to shoot with it.
Neat old gun.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
Started still hunting rabbits at about 14 even though my only relatives who were active hunters lived in Sweden.
When I was 15 my dad brough over from Sweden a side by side Huskvarna 12 guage his dad had given him. My dad had never mentioned it existed even.
I still have it and hunt with it mostly with buck shot for deer of late.
Number two special gun.. a german made 1930's drilling. Lighter in weight than the sxs Huskvarna. Alloy break action and water buffalo trigger guard.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
Wow, the stolen guns stories are sad. I've been VERY fortunate in that my dad collected pre ' 64 Winchesters. I've inherited some model 12's some model 70's and several .22's, my great uncles 10 ga. side by side and others. They are all special to me, but my favorite is the mdl 70 .300 H & H. I still hunt with it, it shoots WAY better than I can, I can't exlain it, it just seems like a "lucky" gun......
On this day I'm thankful for my dads generosity and I'll tell him tonite over dinner!!!

Model 37 Ithaca Featherlight that I got when I was 15. I killed too many birds to count with it. Hadn't used it for a few years, so I decided to bring it on a Pheasant hunt, and it still performed flawlessly. Nothing the old roscoe to bring back great memories!! Happy Thanksgiving to you all!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
Winchester model 67A. Takes 22 short, long, or long rifle. About the safest gun made. Stuff a single bullet in the pipe, close the bolt, then pull the stiff hammer back. My dad and my uncles learned to shoot with it and also supplemented the family dinners with small game. Myself and my brothers all learned to shoot with it. Just started my son on it this past summer. I told him that when he could pull the pin back he could start shooting. He had a pretty tough time but once he dumped a box of mini-mags in his pocket, that hammer sure got soft.
I have picked up several of these classics over the years, including a youth model. Had no idea that the value had gone up so much. At the last gun show they were asking anywhere from $150 to $400 for them. For those looking for a kid x-mas gun I would highly recomend one of these. Yes you can buy one of those chipmonk 22's which is about an exact copy. But wouldn't you rather pass on a piece of history to your son for a few $$$ more???
Also have to mention my Remington 870 wingmaster. Bought it with my own hard earned $$$ on my 18th B-day. I think I paid $199 and that was 25 years ago. Killed a whole bunch of roosters with this gun. More good memories than I can think of.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
Winchester 1200. . .
It was a loaner from my Uncle Steve by way of my Grandpa. Uncle Steve lived (lives) out of state and had left all of his firearms with Grandpa. He let me use it for my first duck hunt when I was eleven. Though it always returned home with Grandpa, the 1200 was the gun I used to kill my first birds. That Christmas, Uncle Steve came to Oregon to celebrate with the rest of the family. When we were handing out presents, I was given a wrapped, small heavy cube from Uncle Steve. Upon opening it, I discovered a box of 2 3/4" steel #2's. Attached to the box was a post-it which read something to the effect of "Your real present is in the shop." Long story short, Uncle Steve's shotgun became mine.
I've used that stick for almost every bird hunt I've ever been on. Its killed grouse, ducks, geese, pheasant, quail and the odd assortment of other critters. I finally stopped taking it on any hunts where there was a high probability of getting very wet, as the wood needs refinished.
Someday. . .that 1200 will be packed by a kid again.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have my Dad's Remington 1100. When my Dad and I started hunting we also started trap shooting at the local range in the hills outside of Oakland California. I was shooting a 20 gauge pump and could manage about 50% on the clays - never did shot a duck with that gun. One day my dad asks if I wanted to shoot the 1100. I broke 85% of the clays that day and went on to get my first duck with that gun later that year. About a year later and lots of sessions at the range I broke 150 clays on same day - something about that gun and me just fit. The odd thing is that my Dad is very tall and had a long rear stock added so that it fit him - I didn't know this and didn't seem to care that the gun didn't fit. I didn't even know till I was looking at that old 1100 sitting next to a friend of mine's and noted that mine was so long and that the trigger was so much higher.
Anyhow, as I grew up lets just say I traveled some very dark roads trying to find my way. When the traffic cleared and I found my way a few years later my Dad gave me that 1100 - its ugly, its really warn - rubber o-rings giving out blueing gone - but I can still shoot the heck out of that gun who cares if it doesn't fit.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have old 12ga and 20ga single shots that were my grandpa's guns. He bought them sometime in the 1950's. Everytime I go back home to IL and rabbit hunt with my dad, I always use one of those guns. We have multiple newer and much nicer semi-auto and pump shotguns, but those are just special to me. I was 4 when my grandpa died, and never really got to know him that well. I guess it's really my way of him still being here with me

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I guess my old .270 remington 700 BDL is special to me. Dad bought it for me for my 12th Christmas! The old gun has treated me well, just put the 20th bull in the freezer.
I hope the .270 remington BDL I bought for my son on his 12th Christmas is as special as mine!

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
When I was about 10 or 11 yrs old my grandfather's entire gun and knife collection including some old Japanese swords were all stolen from his house by my strung out cousin. We can't prove it but we know it. It makes me so mad because my papa was my hero growing up. He grew up living off the land. He had killed over 200 deer in his life in Oregon and Alaska.(In Alaska he could get 5 or 6 a year legally) He was also the best fisherman I'd ever seen. He passed away when I was 12. He had replaced some of his guns before then, but they just weren't the same. I inheireted a 12 gauge and a 30-06. I think the 30-06 is cursed. I have missed every deer or elk I've ever shot at with it. I've got a few grouse with the shotgun.
My favorite gun is my Ruger .270 that I traded a Radio controlled truck for. I have hit almost everything I've shot at with it. I got all 4 elk with it and about 15 deer with it. I even shot the heads off a few grouse with it back when that was legal. The guy I got it from said he couldn't hit a thing with it. That was because he had the scope mounted incorrectly. It came with a scope and a case in great condition. Before I traded him I checked the serial # with the cops. They said there was no report of it being stolen so I traded him. I love that gun.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My father and I build custom rifles together much like a father son team would work on a Hotrod. There is nothing more rewarding than taking game with something you built and planned for.
We currently have two projects, a 6.5/284 and a
.338 lapua. Lots of fun to plan it all and have your guns shoot SUB-MOA

My grandpa gave me his .30-40 Krag when I was 14. I don't really hunt with it anymore but still enjoy shooting it from time to time.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My high school graduation present was a 20g. Ruger Red Label. My dad bought two of them. One for my brother and one for me when we were still in grade school. I've fired thousands of rounds through it between dove, ducks, quail, pheasant, crows, and skeet. The blueing is worn down a lot but I will never refinnish it. I cannot bring myself to shoot steel through it although it is probably ok. I would like to bring it back out to the duck blind someday. Perhaps with heavy shot. I do miss the old days of carrying it with me though.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
It isn't old and it didn't belong to my Dad or Grandpa. At 18, my son walked into Sportsman's and bought his first gun. It was a shotgun for my birthday.
My special gun is a Stoeger semi-auto in camo, a gift from my husband and son. They KNEW I would be upset about the cost since I don't like expensive gifts. They explained to me that a special birthday (40th) deserved a special gift.
Each time I handle my gun...I am moved again by their thoughtfulness and love for me

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
Three years ago my dad suffered a heart attack while at my house. I did CPR on him for half an hour until the paramedics got their and got him restarted. He bought me a Pre-64 Model 70 30-06 featherweight out of a collection. He said out of thanks for keeping his ticker going, he didn't need to do it. I have taken my second Oregon 6point bull with it. The best part is my dad was there on both bulls at age 70.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I second that! That IS truely special.
Welcome aboard Opprotunist! And congrats on the 6pt.
I have many firearms that are special to me in one way or another but I'd have to say my most special ones are my 1st. You see my Grandfather commited suicide many many years ago when I was just a little kid, so I never really knew him. When I was 9 or 10 Grandma gave me his rifle and shotgun, a Rem722 .300sav and a Winchester Model 12. I killed many a duck with that Mod12, and killed the first of many mule deer including my 1st blacktail and my 1st bull, a 5pt, with the 722.
I've since outgrew them, moving on to bigger & faster, but I can't sell'em. They represent my childhood and just looking at them brings back many fond memories of hunting with my brother and my ol'man. I also like to think that when I hunted with them I was somehow getting to know the Grandfather I never knew, through those two guns.

I have my old man's 1971 Remington 870 Wingmaster. It is like brand new, the pump slides like butter and it has a history, I told a story about it a little bit ago.
I use it for pheasant right now and may hunt ducks again but it does not go into the high country because I don't want to beat it uo hunting Blue Grouse.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have an old model 88 308 that was my grandfathers and then my fathers and now mine.
This rifle has a huge sentimental value to me as my grandfather was carrying it when he was killed in a hunting accident. The bullet grazed the stock right behind the bolt before hitting my grandfather. My father shot his fist deer with this rifle. I also shot my first deer with it. (4 point mule in central Idaho).

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I've never shot my favorite rifle. I've had it for 2 years now and it sits in the safe waiting.
I took my new wife and her son to the State fair. We stopped by the Ak fish and game booth and I ended up buying a card in a 52 card raffle for a winchester 70 stainless/synthetic 375H&H. I let Nick pick the card, the ace of hearts, and went on our way, never expecting to win.
The next night we got the call, I won. He was so proud of himself that he picked the right one. I decided I better save it for him. It's a littel too much for a 11 year old to shoot, but he still likes to hold it and dream of the day he can finally take it to the range.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My dad passed down to me a pre-64 Winchester 30-30 that I absolutely love. I wish I was a better shot with open sites, but practise makes perfect. This is the gun my dad hunted with most of his life. I only wish it could tell me the stories and things it has seen and been through. My dad also passed down a never shot Canadian Centinnel Anniversary addition 30-30. 100 year anniversary I forget the dates, but they are something like 1864-1964. It is a saddle gun with octagon barrell. Cool gun, and it will never be fired. These are special because they were my dad's, and I will pass them on to my son in a few years. He is only 8 months old, but it won't be long.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My special gun is my 1926 Savage 99 breakdown in 250-3000 I had been given to use for the last 5 yrs by my Stepfather who I am (was) really close to. He passed away on 11/10 at 81 and was such a great man and patriot that I looked up to, I'll cherrish this rifle forever. Haven't decided if I will still hunt with it or not, or maybe just pick my hunts depending on the weather.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My "Special" gun is my Browning Citori Superlight w/ 26" BB and English Stock. I was 19 and in my favorite Sporting Goods Store. I was looking through the consignment guns and I found this beauty that had just come in. I had just gotten paid and put some $ down on it. I paid it off in time for Pheasant Season. Practiced with it and killed a rooster with the first shot I got at one. It has been my favorite ever since.

my special gun is a rem. single shot .22 that i got from my grandma when grandpa passed away. still drives nails. the thing that means the most is the stories ive heard about the gun. grandma bought it for grandpa in the thirties. she would drive the model "t" while grandpa was on the fender shooting rabbits during the winter for food for the 6 kids they had. thats what makes it special to me.

My Dad's Model 12 that he bought in '36 for $38. In the 40's, he and his buds would hunt for a couple of weeks near Ontario rousting roosters. A few years ago, he (88 years old) and I spent a weekend over there visiting some of his old haunts and we got a few birds. As we were leaving the area he said, "That was my last hunt. Here, take my gun." He died three weeks later.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
wow what a story and sorry about your dad. I have my grandfathers model 1897 12ga Winchester. When he gave it to me he told me to just hang on the wall as it would fire as you shucked the shell in the chamber. I did that for a couple of years and then sent the gun to Simmons gun shop in Olathe kansas. The gun was rebuilt and reblued it looked like new. Took it to the nursing home to show him. Grand dad looked at it and asked me what it cost to do the work. I was very proud and said 15 dollars. He looked at me and said "you dumb %$@* the gun cost me 5 dollars. That was 47 years ago. I took it with me when my 5 year old gradson wanted to go bird hunting this fall. He had his Red Ryder bb gun with him then but the gun went home with my grandson and son I told my son to be sure and tell him what his :smile:great great grandfather though about the cost to fix the gun.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
roscoep and i have the same special gun. the ithaca mdl 37 (mine made in '47). my grandpa gave it to me when i was just shy of 12. it had been dunked in the willamette at one time by my uncle (in the late 50's) and needed a little cleaning up but i loved that gun when i started using it. i messed it up when i went with some buddies for a pheasant hunt on finley during my college days. i slid on a corner (after the first rain of the of the Fall), hit the ditch and bent the barrel (muzzle pointed down in the back seat). totaled my car and couldn't drink that night at the party 'cause of concussion concerns. I shot it here and there for several years until i talked my wife into a new ithaca 37. i still love the old gun and wouldn't sell it for anything (got a used barrel that fits so it still shoots) Hope one of the kids will want it. Just thinking about that gun gives me a lot of good memories.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
well all mine are still in the postion of my fathers "thankfully" but there will be two that i will remember 1 is a 1884 Winchesters 45-70 took my first bull with it the second one is a old enfeild he bought back in the 50S cleaned all the cosmolen SP off it and went hunting killed its first deer 8 hours after buying it. in the 70S he had it rechambered to a 300 win Mag so if you look at the kills that guns done between elk and deer it be well over 100 animals i used it this last week to take my cow.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
My special gun is one that I worked for and bought back in the early 70's. It is a model 70A Winchester 30-06. I paid $110 brand new and bought the scope for $80. I worked a year at little store pumping gas to buy it. Still has the same stock although it has been re-finshed a couple of times and we floated the barrel. I also sliped in some shale in Idaho and chipped the stock down by the butt. I have used that gun for over 30 years and although I could afford and do have other rifles I will never part with it. I have never shot a elk with it as I bow hunt but it has brought down about 5 elk as a loaner and I have lost track of the deer I have shot. I have had only to re zero it couple of times for a new scope refinishing ect. It is heavy and I dream about a new light mountain rifle I will always grab this gun for deer season. It shoots better than me.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
I have a Model 98 winchester .32 special my dad gave to me.
It was used by a sniper in Portland that used it to shoot up a neighborhood. I shot my first buck with it. It has a long octagon barrel and looks brand new.

Re: Do you own a SPECIAL gun?
It isn't mine yet,,,but my Father-in-law is giving me his A.H. Fox SxS 12ga. His dad picked it up in England in 1945 on tour with the Army in W.W.2. It has to be the nicest gun I've ever seen. I don't want to say "I can't wait" but.....someday. BH
