Default prefernce points

i was looking at the new hunting stats and point info on the odfw website and i would like confirmation on my calculations.

regarding the wenaha unit and the archery tag.

if odfw issues 20 tags in 2006 like i have been told and a hunter currently has 9 points any chance of being drawn for a tag outside the 25% "general draw" would be zero until 7 years from now when the chance would be about 30%.

if everthing stays the same

there will be

5 hunters with 12 points
32 hunters with 11 points
35 hunters with 10 points
76 hunters with 9 points

say it isn't so!!!

it appears that your math is correct. Keep putting in and eventually you will get drawn. My partners and I have drawn that tag only once in the last 15 years.

The only consolation is that not everything stays the same. There is some attrition as hunters give up and start applying for other hunts instead. However, as someone so aptly put it awhile ago, applying for Wenaha elk with less than max points is like chasing a rainbow.

You can't get drawn unless you apply, you have almost as good a chance with no points as you do max. I drew it with 3

I'd give up if I were you! That way those of us with fewer point will get there sooner.

My dillema is if I do get drawn will I be able go with the newborn twins in house.

After hunting there for years I still make an occassional jaunt to the Wenaha - there has been a steady decline in bull quality and calf recruitment - by the time you draw it won't be like it was ... IMHO ... plenty of cats and bears ... I have seen plenty 1st hand ...

I've been toying with the idea of drawing Wenaha for spring bear next year and doing a combo predator hunt. Is there really a good chance of calling a cougar, and what area would be best?

Ni,
Lot's of bear in there and cougar too.
My advice hunt the G.R.River side and go deep.
Grass will be greener and they should be out on the hillsides rolling rocks. The big draws would be where I'd look for cougar. I have some ideas, but I'd have to consult a map before typing. Bear Crk would be a start though.
No kidding, we used to float the river a lot during the summer when I was a kid and we always saw bear around where B.Crk hits the river. Very big canyon and I KNOW there is cougar in there, 3-4yrs back I heard one throwing a big fit about something. Not sure if it was in heat or in a trap, but it was a very eierry sound.
I would try electronic fawn distress and maybe some scent.

Thanks for the info Hunt'nFish. I'll consult my Maptech charts of the area. I've always meant to get over there, but just never have done it.

I've got a new FoxPro with a bunch of lion sounds as well as deer sounds, so I should be pretty well set in that respect. Just need to put myself within hearing range of a big kitty.

your math is "almost" correct. you forgot all the guys with max points that are in the point saver pool, only another 150 guys.
They havn't had 20 tags in quite a while, I would be surprised if they up it.
