Default ODFW has posted 2004 Hunting Stats.

The ODFW seems to have updated there webpage with
2004 hunting stats.

If you have the bandwidth, I would just download the Full Report, its pretty nice.

How do I interpret this data? I'll go with Pronghorn hunt 471A, Juniper unit.

I drew this tag with 4 preference points, it was my first choice. Of the 184 apps with 4 points, why isn't there any numbers next to 4 on the report?

You must have drawn it with the 25% allotment that is drawn from the general pool of applicants. Since it wasn't based on the number of points you had, it would be misleading on this chart to indicate the drawn tag in the 4 points column. This chart is only intended to tell you about the 75% of tags that are drawn based on points. Since everyone who's left has the same odds of drawing the last 25% of the tags, there's no need to indicate who got them since it would only confuse the situation.

OK, thanks. I thought that was what it was saying. It'd be nice to know the points for the other people that drew though. There were 21 other people that drew and are back to zero for next year.

That's a good point. Maybe another column for that info would be helpful.

I wonder who the guy was that used 10 pts to draw an Imnaha elk tag.

Not saying there aren't some good bulls in the Imnaha, but lets think about it for a minute....Wenaha vs. Imnaha....hmmm....maybe he got his 'aha's mixed up!!!!

Speaking of the Wenaha, 586 Weneha applicants have more points than I do,and another 227 have the same number of point I do...assuming they all put in until they draw, in 59 years I will have 4% chance of drawing a tag.

I better start planning my trip!!!!!!!

I feel real lucky to have drawn our tag as often as we do and then to be successful every year.

Here's a tip on reading these stats: Make sure you subtract the number of non-resident hunters from the number of total hunters when calculating the number of people ahead of you in line. For some reason they didn't list a residents-only column, but lumped everyone together. It makes it kind of confusing if you don't look real close.

For example: 256R Wenaha Elk Bow. There were 64 residents with 8 preference points, and 12 non-residents with 8 points. These are added together in the All Hunters column to show 76 hunters with 8 points.

This means that with my 8 points next year, I'll only have 232 hunters equal to or ahead of me instead of the 266 hunters shown in the All Hunters column.

It could've been a "non-hunting" party leader. Think about it. Some wife of a hunter buys a preferance point every year by putting in for Wenaha 1st choice, cow tag 2nd choice....10yrs later burns the points to get hubby & co. in on a party hunt. No requirement that she buy the tag as party leader.

What worries me is there is a lot of bubbles in there with as many points as me. For example Hart mountain I had 10 points last year. There were 20 tags and 229 hunters with 10 points 157 guys with 11 points and 34 hunters with 12 points. The same thing with the Whenaha so at this rate unless tags are increased and I get lucky I could be waiting another 5 years just for Hart Mountain. It seems as is if though there are lot more bubbles than chances...

I don't think the stats are shown that way -- it ought to list them by their party average -- rounded (down for <= .50) to whole number points -- just as it uses them for the draw. I could be wrong -- but it wouldn't make sense to show them the way you describe...

Cheers,

Blindsquirrel,

I think you are right

It doesn't make sense that someone would used 7 points to draw a spike only tag for Wenaha. They couyld have drawn the spike only tag with their second choice and not lost their points. Looks like party hunting stratagy.

Time to bone up on what to expect in the Wenaha Bull hunt. (I better make sure I don't apply for Imnaha)I had no idea I was so close to drawing.

I have a 9.6% chance of drawing one next year with what will be 11 elk points in 06.

I've been doing second choice with a Saddle Mt Y hunt. Have only hunted Rocky Mt elk twice. Never in Oregon just non-res in Wash and Montana. I don't see getting a bull to be a problem. Just finding one of those massive ones might be a little tricky.
