Default Finish of spoilage/Elk hunt story

There is a happy ending!

Sorry it took so long to fill everybody in, I know there was a lot of concern, My computer isn't the most cooperative thing in the world.

Anyway the next moring they went up and found the elk early. It was found about 14-15 hours after it was shot. They said they got it skinned and gutted in less then an hour. We hung it up to dry and butchered it yesterday. Suprisingly there was very little spoiled meat. Just like DLA said the spoilage was just near the guts. All in all I would say there was about 10 lbs of meat we threw out at the most. We made all sausage out of it. We cooked it a little bit longer then normal to get all the bacteria out. I just ate some a little bit ago, and my belly is fine, no B.G.'s (bubbly guts) for me.

I know alot of people were very concerned and I hope this eases their concern. This is a valuble lesson for everybody. Like they say a smart person learns from their mistakes, but a genius learns from other people's mistake's! Hopefully my hunting party weren't the only ones to get a lesson out of this whole thing. I like your idea Rusty, but instead of spending a bunch of money on my brother for a gps, I'll get him a roll of orange ribbon.

Good to hear that Winterkill. And I am glad you went to the effort to hang it, butcher it and then see. Congratulations.
I have been involved with several deer that have been shot in the evening and not found until the next morning. All of them turned out alright after a thorough cleaning.
I was curious on how the elk turned out.

Whew! I'm so glad it turned out ok. They did good to get on it as fast as they could, and lucked out finding it so quick. I'm sure a lesson was learned not only by this hunting party, but by others too. I just hope no one reads this and thinks they can get away with this too. Your brother was very, very lucky.

I don't know about the gps, but if nothing else, a guys gotta have a knife and some marking tape. With those relatively inexpensive tools, one can gut it, cool it, and relax a little.

I've gutted more than one animal with a broadhead cuz I'd left my pack in the rig and didn't have my knife (those quick little hunts that end up being not so quick...).

I'm glad he got his elk...

Way to stick it out and make the best out of a grim looking situation.

Good news about your elk. About 20 years ago a couple friends gut shot a bull and lost it . It was the first bull killed by this friend. Not the next day but the day after that he found it. He felt so bad that he gutted it ,stone cold and turning green in the meat . Stunk like you cant believe. He went to his mico-biology teacher and ask if it was o.K. to eat. The professor responded that it wont hurt you if you cook it well. So he ate it .... Fried the stakes and said they were fine with a bunch of B.B.Q. sauce. id. painter
