Default Need a Gunsmith for Muzzle Break

I'd like to get back into some more bench shooting and would like to port my .300 Win Mag to make it a bit more tolerable to shoot at the range. The gun is a Ruger Stainless Mark II and it's super accurate - I've shot several 3 shot groups less than 1/2 inch with it and I am somewhat concerned that the accuracy will go downhill if I add a muzzlebreak. Anyone have any suggestions as to which type of break to add and who to do it in the Portland area?

Thanks.

Joe

KT, don't do it if you ever plan on hunting with it, unless you wear hearing protection while hunting. A friend of mine gave my son a .338 WM with a brake on it. It will fold your ears back! He shot three times at a nice branch bull and quit shooting. His ears hurt too much. My son wants to keep "as is" so I had to buy him two Walker's Game Ears.

Joe for what the break will cost installed, save up and buy a bench rest or varmint rifle. I've put a break on before and yes they reduce recoil at the cost of noise at the shooters end. I also hate seeing recoil breaks at sight-in days its like getting kicked in the head every shot and I'm not even shooting.

If you must, install a KDF recoil break and have a thread protector made at the same time. That way you can unscrew the break and protect the threads when hunting from dings. Mine always shot the same with and without the break.

I had mine done at Al's Gun Shop. Stan (the owner) sends it out to a local guy who used to work for Pachmyer. The breaks are very tricky to install correctly as barrels are not always round or bored dead center.
