49 Geese Dumped
Did anyone else catch the report just now on KATU? 49 Canadian Geese were shot somewhere and then taken to the woods in Clackamas County. They were just dumped there in a big pile and left to rot!! WHAT AN OUTRAGE! Whoever did this should be dealt with SEVERELY! I hate poachers! Sorry...just had to vent

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
I'm not trying to condone this action it really torques me. When the state did this very thing this last spring to like over 2500 geese (Damage Control)where was the news on that. To me it is just as bad as what these jerks did.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
Seems to me that the state and the farmers need to work together so that they can hook up some hunters to help control these geese instead of the "kill 'em all" syndrome. I'd be happy to help some of the farmers out if they would just "let" us on their land instead of charging a lot of money. And those lazy Dr,'s and Attorneys don't hunt on a nasty day or a bluebird day! That's not "control" because they aren't "hunters". Anyway, can you see my theory here? No hunters would just kill a bunch of geese without eating them. Someone had to be mad enough at the geese to just murder them like that. Farmers get mad when the geese eat that winter wheat!

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">The state used to publish a list of farmers with damage control problems and mail it to goose permit holders. I guess they gave up on this?
On another note, if you ask any farmer who just "let" people on his/her land to hunt, to the answer is usually the same- "Been there, done that, never again." The biggest complaint is that they let 2 guys in, then they tell their buddies, then the next day there's 6 guys and they tell their buddies, and the next weekend there's 20, all running around like they own the place. At that point it's far easier for the landowner to just shut everything down rather than deal with the chaos. Or better yet, lease the rights. If people have to spend $$ to hunt, they'll do a much better job of policing themselves. Besides, if I was the farmer, and I had an asset that had the potential to produce income, I'd definitely take advantage of it.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
Or they don't ask!!!
I have permission to hunt on some private land in Marion County and every time I go back there, there are at least 15-20 other people back there. I asked the owner who else has permission to be there and he said I was the only on he has given permission to in about 10 years. He used to let people on the land but they dug pit blinds in the middle of his wheat field and left all of there shells and garbage so he told them not to come back.
The corker, He gave me keys to get through the gate and when I got there the dirtbags ahead of me had hooked onto the gate and pulled it out with there rigs.
The landowner called the Marion county sherriff and they pretty much told him that sucked but they couldn't do anything.
Makes me very mad! I have done everything right and should be able to hunt his land with relative little disturbance and when I get there 20 others are ahead of me and they have trashed the guys place.
Does anyone have any Idea how to deter these dirtbags in the future! Law Enforcement won't seem to help.
Sorry I just had to vent a bit.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
ODFW doesnt make it any easier to kill them either, with the 8 AM start time and early closure. Thats off topic but what the heck..

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
FishOrDie, if I were you I'd offer to police the guy's property in exchange for exclusive permission to hunt there. Then you can run everybody off who doesn't belong there. It sounds like the same repeat offenders, so once you get the message across you'll probably have the place to yourself. It'll probably be a hassle at first, and I would take some backup along in case it gets ugly. I'd give 'em a chance to leave on their own and if that didn't work, call the cops, have their rigs towed, etc etc. It would be better to stop them on the way in than to try to evict them once they're on the property.
The cops are probably saying they can't do anything because they can't catch them in the act. But you can. Tearing down a gate is vandalism at least, more likely criminal mischief, in addition to trespassing. And I'd make sure the property is posted as private and "no hunting" for good measure.
If the owner doesn't know what's going on either it's a big chunk of property or he doesn't live there.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
I don't think a farmer shot these birds. If a farmer DID shoot these birds then why not bury them on their own land rather than dump them alongside a road or on another's property?

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
All that I can say is WOW! Like GotZem said, there is a serious communication problem as far as damage control goes. I am curious about these particular geese.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
Keta brings up an interesting idea. Did the report say if the geese are going to an ODFW lab? I would be interested to see if they were killed with a shotgun or a .22 . To me, shotgun would say hunters who need to go cut themself a switch, or we start punishing like Singapore
It if were .22 I would suspect an angry farmer or golf course worker.
Either way, its not cool. We would all help with a goose problem, legally. We (hunters) don't need the bad press.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
I think Keta might be on to something. The geese that I saw being examined on TV were greater basins - big golf course type geese, not the cacks, lessers and dusky's that the farmers have problems with.
GotZem - think twice before posting discriminating comments about lawyers and doctors - that was inconsiderate not to mention irresponsible.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
KT,
Your profession has a bad rep  but not all lawyers deserve it, probably 80% are ok  The same goes for doctors, several have not been billing me due to my low income and high medical bills One sent me to collection after we paid a $2800 bill down to less than $200 and we couldn't pay him for two months

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
Keta - I don't have a problem with your complaint - but for someone to just make a blanket statement that doctors and lawyers are lazy and "aren't real hunters" is just ludicrous.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
I just saw on the news that there has been 5 people charged with this crime. I hope they all get the maximum penalty allowed. The report also said that two seperate tips led to the arrests. I would like to thank those two people that reported these poachers.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">And a big thank you to KATU's Grant McOmie for being instrumental in giving this the coverage it needed and asking for the tips that led to these guys.

Re: 49 Geese Dumped
Tresspassers should all be shot. I live on a big chunk of my wifes families land on the coast range. No matter how many signs we put up people still act like we are the enemy. The local law enforcement was absolutely worthless in helping stop the problem. One of the sheriffs even went as far as telling us that if people are tresspassing on on part of the land then why don't we hunt in a different part of the property. Well that was not going to work for us. So what we did this year was call out the state police. The two game officers that came out were absulutely great. They came and we took them on a drive around the property and showed them the entry points that these people use to get on the property. They would come asap when we busted a tresspasser. And they would take pictures and build a case on these guys so that the charges would actually stick in court. Before I got with my wife I never understood why these people with hundreds of acres of land keep it so locked up. Now I understand!!!! I was sitting in one of my good spots this deer season when I turned my head and saw a guy standing 10 feet from me. I asked what he was doing there and he said he just ended up there. From where he parked he passed 2 posted signs, jumped one fence, passed a blown down cabin, walked down a little road, past a 3 sided wood shed and into a patch of apple trees planted in rows. He then said that he did not realize this was private property. What a freaking idiot. Then he wouldn't give me his name. Well I was able to catch him driving is truck down the road he used to get up to the entrance point and got his license plate. The state police cited him with tresspassing, unauthorized hunting in an enclosed area, and failure to show hunting license when asked. He is going to get hammered for it. If people would stop tresspassing then maybe more land owners would open there land to hunters. Just if a land owner gives you the permission to hunt don't take any unauthorized liberties on the land. Don't bring your friends or poach. These land owners have paid good money for this land. And it is there land. Would anybody like it if some guy was walking around in their back yard. Sorry for rambling. Just my two cents.
