Default Deer Hunting with Dogs?!?!?!?

My goodness! I just got back from a week long business trip to North Carolina. I tried to put a duck hunting trip together while I was back there, but the weather was way too nice - mid to upper 70s late in the week. So I started asking around about some deer hunting opportunities. I couldn't believe what they told me and what I saw:

First of all, they are allowed to hunt deer with dogs over there. The vacant property next to the facilty I was visiting had two deer stands that were about 100 yards from a timber line. The timber was about 200 yards deep. Two guys climbed in the 20-foot high stands. A truckdrove along the road on the other side of the timber and let three dogs loose in the trees. The dogs chased out 6 deer toward the guys in the stands. They were all small deer and none were shot. But I guess this is how they do it down there. Needless to say, I did not participate.

I bow hunted alot in southern Virginia. So many times I have been run over with dogs chasing deer. The biggest problem in that area is the dogs getting on private land. It's a very touchy subject and one that causes problems every year.

I got to see this first hand. I even got to participate in this type of hunting. I was stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for 5 years. Most of the hunting I did was from a tree stand. At the end of the deer season the base General would allow hunting with dogs on base. During deer season on base you could kill 5 deer. The whitetail were thick all over the base. You would set a grid up and have the dogs run the deer to hunters on the other end of the grid. The dogs didn't have a chance. The deer got so far ahead of the dogs it wasn't even funny. The whole point of using the dogs was to get the deer out of the thick stuff, remember that it's very flat and very thick in the south. That's why most people hunt out of tree stands. What made it even more challenging was that you could only use a shotgun with buck shot or a slug. The shooting was close if you got a shot. To be honest with you I didn't care for the dogs. We have it pretty good here in the Northwest.Much of Western North Carolina is tied up with private hunt clubs where dogs are used all the time. I'll take a blacktail or mule deer any day compared to those tick infested whitetail. A great experience non the less.

Ft. Bragg NC for 5 years. The first year I hunted they all looked at me like I was cracy when I said I had no tree stand, corn and beer. I walked my but off and ended up just pushing deer to other people so I gave in and did the tree stand thing. A lot of people leave tree stands all over the woods so I would just find an empty one and start hunting. The deer concentrations are much higher than OR so tree stand hunting is really effective. Not all use dogs but most use bait. A lot of them use their dogs to chase deer off of private property.

As for size, yes they are small but you are allowed 5 a year for $40 (that was a few years ago) and I got some nice racks while I was there.

I hear Wisconsin takes the cake. They shoot some ungodly amount of deer in one week hunting over bait.
