Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
Second period permit zone opener was pretty good to us today, with lots of birds working in the decoys and some good shooting. I swear though, if you want it to be a nice, clear, windless day, just put me in the goose field.
Two of us hunted a spot just east of Corvallis and had good numbers of geese come through looking for their plastic buddies on the ground. We got a little smug at one point and passed up some shots because we knew we were going to get them to land in the spread. Ha Ha. They musta smelled us, because all of a sudden they were headed for parts unknown.
We had a few slow times, but mostly had birds in sight or working every few minutes. We quit earlier than we actually needed to, but we wanted to get back to watch the game.
Pretty good day all in all. Maybe next time one or the other of us will remember a camera.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
hunted Sauvie on saturday. a bad chip # kept me out of the prime locations for the early hunt...however, people leaving early got me into a good spot later in the day.
lots of birds flying early, but take care...these birds are super call and decoy shy now and flare at anything that even looks like it might be suspicious. i watched a few flocks flare off of an empty blind.
the frustrated hunters skybusting all over the place isn't helping it either. i heard the guys on seal lake shooting up a storm..only to find out later that seal 1 and 2 didn't get a bird all morning...and 4 left with 4.
anyway, we hunted Seal #6 in the AM and Seal #1 in the afternoon and managed to scrape out 6 birds with 2 hunters. 3 out of each blind.
SI is still a good opportunity, but camo up from head to toe, crouch down as low and close to the blind as you can get and stay still...you might get a few in close.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
did 2nd season bow....elk and deer. Headed down behind Lincoln city........not alot of fresh sign around bear creek. Hunted pretty hard,in and out of the bush. Not alot of movement until late. No elk ,all deer.
I think that most of the does are in estrus or coming to the latter end. The bucks havent been moving around as much in the last weeks. When Stingray and I did some rattling accompanied by bleats and grunts, the woods came alive . We were surrounded by 4 bucks all inside 30 yards. The problem was we werent set up right or the site was not "shooter freindly". Its tough to draw your bow when many eyes are looking. Im thinking here in the next few weeks the bucks will be prowling again looking for those newly receptive females.
Anyone have any close encounters with elk?

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
Hunted the NW goose re-opener with my son.Birds got up early off the lake around 7 when we where setting up dekes in the field. We got one cackler out of a pair right after 8. We could not get the bigger flights to come in as they had been on the 8th.They didn't want to hear a call at all.My son went back to the truck to try to get the three wheeler going(did later, had to go into town and get a spark plug and wires. It sure helped packing things through the mud)while he was gone I had 4 birds come in to the cluck and because of the clouds I just couldn't ID them,so I passed.I kept calling and they came around a 2nd and 3rd time.On the 3rd pass at 25 yards I could tell enough and dropped one,Rilla picked it up and I saw how bright it was.The other 3 swung around in front and I dropped another one dead in the dekes with the 2nd shot on the 3rd shot sailed one with a broken wing about 300 yards out into the field(plowed corn). After Rilla brought the 2nd one back I walked out with her about 100 yards out and sent her on a line, worked her into the crip and she got to have fun chasing it down(her greatest passion in life). As we where heading back the 4th bird kept circling and I called to it and it swung around.I only had 2 shells left in the pocket and reloaded.I shot and missed.I kept calling,it locked up and I shot the last shell and it dropped,I was done for the day with 4 Tavs. The flights pretty much dried up after that.Even without the birds it was a beautiful day and really glad to spend it with 2 of my best buddies,my son and pooch.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
Went on a ride-along as a "human mule" for my first archery elk hunt (I wasn't hunting). We were in the snow the whole time. Saw 5 animals, but didn't close the gap. ALso saw 3 deer and one monster bull after dark in the headlights. I think I'm hooked. Now I just need to learn how to shoot one of those stick-flingers myself so I can hunt next year.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/22 - 11/28
Hit Sauvie Island westside this morning and drew #51. Too high a number for us (our cutoff is 40), so we took off to the eastside to see what we could get in the non-res line. Ended the day at our usual 11am with 6 mallards, 5 teal, and a widgeon. Normally we wouldn't shoot so many teal, but we took a shot at a group of 3 near the end of the day and all 3 fell dead. Finally got some teal drakes, I haven't seen or shot any all season. Also, we had a canvasback drake come into the dekes in the morning. Sure was nice to see another one of those, it's been a long time.

2 limits of wigeon and mallards from a flooded field on the east side of the valley. Done by 7:20. Now that's what I call a GREAT morning.
