Paulina/ E. Ft. Rock Story
Hey thanks to everyone for the advice the week before last. I had to drive from Seattle to Gilchrist in order to be ready for opening morning on the 8th. I got In at about 3:00am to find my buddy had locked me out of the house & had to sleep on the porch in the cold until he found me out there around 5:30, at which point we headed out. We hunted the area right near town east of 97 & cut fresh tracks in the snow almost immediately. We got into a heard of about 20 or so & I managed to scare them off with out getting a shot. We decided to drive in the direction of which some of them had scattered. Creeping down the Skid Trail I looked to my Right out the passenger window & low & behold there was a bull & two cows about 15 yards away running in the opposite direction of the truck. We circled around & I dropped off my buddy to run a push for me to the junction of 2 skid trails where I could get a shot. The timber was pretty thick so I couldn’t see more than 30 yds back in. About 15 min after getting set up I could hear them running around back in the thicket. The bull burst across the skid trail & I shot. He stumbled. & took off up a hill. When I made it to where he had come across the trail found no sign of blood, just a stump that he’d tripped over. I had a bad feeling that my shot was in front of him when I pulled the trigger but was hoping for the best – None such luck.
On Wednesday I was making my way out to china hat butte to look for that 6X6 RH had been chasing around. I blasted my tire about 5 miles off of 31 & discovered I had never reclaimed my Jack that I had lent to my dad earlier in the fall. I gathered my gear & hiked out to the Highway to hitch a ride to Schwab’s in lapine. Luckily just as I Made it to 31 a nice guy named George was turning off to do some wood cutting, he picked me up & helped change the tire. I offered to give him some help with the wood cutting but he advised I had more important things to do & left it at that –
We need more guys like George in the woods to save our bacon when little mistakes turn huge.
I didn’t see another ELK after opening day so RH’s 6x6 is still out there
As a consolation prize I nailed 4 ducks on sauvies last Sunday – You win some, you loose some.
