Default Truck and the Salt - For you Harvey Dorymens

Hey all, was strictly wondering the situations many of you on this board face. Whenever backing a boat in saltwater you 'try' to NEVER touch the wheels in the salt, due to corrosion would kill them in a matter of days.

However, looking back at you Harvey Dorymens at PC seems to plunge you trucks in like they were made for the salt. What do you guys do to stop corrosion on your expensive wheels? Wash them out with soap every time you go out?

Here's a picture from the Dory Page

Thanks for replying all, David during Fish Mode

EDIT: it would seem that any secrets that any one of you guys have against salt corrosion on your truck wheels would be suitable for this topic. Anyone? rather than just washing out your tires after every contact.

I had an old set of big wheels and tires I put on my pick-up and I never backed in as far as the picture shows. I would hose my truck off when I got home. Never really had any problems.

In the spring before the season starts. MOst of them (including myself), put 1 gal of Diesel fuel and 1 qt of transmission fluid together in a garden sprayer. We then pump up the sprayer and soak the under carrage of the vehicle as well as the wheels, leave it outside to soak up and that helps delay the effects of salt on the vehicles.
This is my beach rig. Helps to have tires tall enough to keep the frame, wheels and brakes out of the water

:lurk: Thanks Kujo, that was really what I was asking for. So how often would you do that routine if you were to go dory fishing regularily? Nice Rig BTW, but it would look much nicer with a boat in the back  Thanks for sharing

Mr. Fisherman is correct, you can see the front of my dory in the picture.
Here is a picture of my Harvey called AMAZING GRAPE :

I squirt my rig down on Memorial Day and Labor day. Also to let you know if I get too far in the water, the tires are so big and hold so much air that they will float the truck!

Did you ever consider an anchor for your truck?

Anchor? Kujo don't need no stinkingk anchor.....

If he ever got it floating he would most likely just drop it into 4-wheel drive and see if he could get it planein'!

Hey C Kujo, that trailer looks just like mine except mine is a duel axle. Do you use that tilt action to put the boat in when you're on the beach? I have never seen the tilt trailer in action...

Yep...tilt trailer, all the PC dorymen have them..That's how they get those boats off the beach. a guy by the name of John Morgan custom builds them, he's just outside of Beaver charges about $4000.00 and they are galvanized. Excellent quality. I'm going to get one the spring.

Well, I don't think I'll be launching my starcraft off the beach any time soon, but it is interesting to know what the funtion of the tilt is. I thought maybe it was for when you had a ramp that was relatively shallow, and the dropped abruptly; too much to ge the wheels over. I pictured backing up to the sharp drop, and then tilting the tailer and rolling the boat off.

Also, I just completed a 100% rebuild on mine. New axles, rebuilt tongue, rollers, bunks, winch, lights paint job, etc. It is basically brand new!

Thanks for the answer!
