Default Wilson Elk

Hunted the wilson unit saturday and sunday for the spike season and didn't see a thing, not even a deer.
Saw no fresh sign and the weather sucked, I still had a good time. On a side not though we drove up a Weyerhouser road and found four dead animals, three elk and a forked deer. I looked around and didn't see arrows(nothing against bowhunters!!!) and on the freshest one there was no visible penetration wound. Three of the four were mostly bones but one of the cows was still pretty much intact. Anyone have any idea what happened here? What about some advice for a first time elk hunter who could use it.

Steelie Ben-

Welcome to elk hunting on the coast. I was out on Saturday, and was supposed to meet up with a couple guys. Never found them, they had 2 cow tags and covered tons of ground but didn't see a thing on Saturday or Sunday.

Saturday, I decided to hit an area I had seen deer/elk lots of times. Moved really slow walking and used my binoculars every 10ft. Finally got near the bottom of the hill by a river and decided there were no elk to be found.
I cow called once loud and looked down, a cow stood up about 50 ft below me. I could see another bedded down, so I pulled up my gun to verify if their were any spikes. Nope.. they took off in a full run across the river and up the side of the hill never to be seen from again.

It then took me 1.5 hours going through the thickest terrain imaginable to get out. I kicked something else out as I was following the tracks, but never saw it. Probably a lone bull.

Anyway, that is elk hunting. Seeing anything is pretty good I guess. Stick to it, get off the roads, and slowly beat the brush. You may just get lucky...
