What do you like more?
I know that this is going to be different for everyone but I thought I would ask just to see.
All things being equal (ie. same chance of hook ups) would you rather catch a fish on a dry fly or with a nymph?

I like to Nymph fish get up in a small bolder filled creek or stream and pak around behind rocks and logs so I am going to have to say nymph for me. rp

Self-tied dry. Even when all other things aren't equal.

Re: What do you like more?
On lakes, dry fly even if it not nearly as effective as subsurface. On moving water, it depends. If the suface action is not happening, it's nymphing time. Since your question was "all else equal" the answer is dry fly.

Nothing beats seeing the fish explode on a surface fly or better yet, leisurely sipping in the fly with an expolsion afterwards when you set the hook!!!

Dry by far. Then for me it would be a Rooster Tail before the Nymph.

Re: What do you like more?
I missed seeing my first topwater steelhead take because I was too busy yapping my head off to my fishing buddy . I did hear it though, and my buddy saw it, uttering some "colorful" explicatives, as the fish viciously attacked and inhaled my muddler. As soon as I heard the loud "SLOOSH", my rod was yanked downriver and the fight was on! Nice native buck about 9lbs taken in late September of 1980 or 81 on the EF Lewis. I've had a few more topwater fish since then, but nothing like that first attack. Probably a good thing I didn't see it since I would be forever ruined as a steelhead fisherman!
So yes, IF I had my choice I'd take 'em on top.

It would have to be a dry ... except for searun cutthroat hitting a reverse spider just below the surface!

Re: What do you like more?
Yea I would have to go with the majority and say that I would much rather see the fish take the fly then feel it through the rod. Something about the fish rising to the surface.
And boy when a steelhead comes up and takes the dry it is something else.
Thanks for all the input

Re: What do you like more?
On a lake, nothing rising...nymph.
Hatch is on...dry.
Even with my primitive casting skills, one of the best days I spent on the water was during a mayfly hatch. Fish on almost every cast.

Emerger..... .....Had to say it, just for fun!!
For the record, first fish on a fly rod (bamboo antique Granger mind you) was on a #12 mosquito (I was 8). I'll never forget it as long as I live.

I don't discriminate...
I wonder how many of you guys refuse to switch to a nymph even when there is nothing at all hatching...

Re: What do you like more?
1. if you are on a river and you are waiting to see fish rising before you fish a dry you are making a mistake. Dries are just as effective as nymphs even in non-hatch situations. May-September
All things being equal Dries all the way!
if i have to fish nymphs i'd rather be at home sitting on the couch eating potatoe chips.. but i'll go hunting with streamers anyway!!1

Rob makes a good point. If there's no hatch, I generally will tie on a terrestrial (ant or hopper).

Re: What do you like more?
To me fly fishing is about imitating what the trout are feeding on...not what I want them to be feeding on. If the temps are cold and the fish are sipping midges I'm throwing midges...if the temps are up and the conditions are right for a dry I will switch.
I know alot of guys that refuse to tie on anything but a dry...to each his own...and thats the beauty of fly fishing...
I probably nymph 50% of the time in the summer, and 85% in the winter.

all I am saying is that most of the summer the best fishing isn't by fish that are feeding on a hatch.. they are feeding actively and opportunistically on whatever floats by..

I would have to agree with the majority and say dry. I don't think there is anything as exciting as seeing that flash as the fish hits or even better seeing the fish come up on the take.

Wet Flies ALL THE WAY!!!
There are more bugs trying to get to the surface of the water than on top.
And...if you ever miss a hit and have the fly line come back in your face...you will wish you had a weighted sinking line. You don't have that problem.
Been fly fishing 5 years, used 2 dry flies...gave up on it...NYMPHS ALL THE WAY!!!!!

Re: What do you like more?
For one thing !
The difference is with dry fly fishing you see a rise and that gets you excited. The expectation of catching a fish enters the mind. Next you make your cast and Bang, there is a visual effect to it. Not to say you can't target fish like that with a nymph because you certainly can.
Dry Fly fishing is my favorite.

Dryve Bye. Unless, of course, could learn how to roll cast like BTS. If I could somehow, master this brahs major roll casty on the big d, I would jump on either. Otherwise, its definately dry.

Re: What do you like more?
Dry.....just for the visual experience and heart arrhythmias that follow. Subsurface is fine.....to get me back to paying attention instead of looking at the herons, geese, ducks, beavers, otters, deer, other critters, and the view while fishing.
