Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/15 - 11/21
Hunted Summer Lake today and got my clock cleaned. In a spot where a week ago we took two limits of mallards today we got blanked. We passed on early teal and wigeon and the mallard flight never happened. Weather was good, bird count was good, but flight was atrocious. I'm still scratching my head on that one...Hunting locally near Monroe tomorrow.

Excellent hunting today in south Benton county. There was a steady flight from 10-3, with some large flocks milling around. Mostly mallards with a couple of teal mixed in.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/15 - 11/21
Saturday I hunted suoixon with my dad for deer. It was his second day in the woods, I've spent 12 this year now. Through 11 days I hadn't seen a legal buck, and through most of day 11 dad and I hadn't seen anything. We split up on a couple different areas, the first time, dad saw a deer that he didn't get a good look at, and I saw nothing. The second time I saw nothing, and got back to the truck to talk to dad, who'd seen a buck... are you kidding. He had been walking, stopped and was standing for a minute or two when a deer came walking over the hilltop towards him at about 30 ft. He froze, trying not to make sudden movements as the deer proceeded towards him, until it was within 10 feet, where it stopped, turned and... scratched some fleas. Dad's plan was to wait till the buck walked past then shoot, but before it passed it turned and bolted. Dad was frustrated b/c he didn't get a shot, I was in disbelief that he saw a buck. Today I hunted the afternoon in the helleous weather... wind and rain. Saw nothing all afternoon. After drying off for a while I headed out for the last hour of light, walking a powerline. I walked a ways, then jumped a deer some 50 yards ahead of me, right into the brush, no clue on antlers. I walked ever so slowly, along the trees looking in for it, when I came over the next ridge on the powerlines there was a deer 30 yards straight ahead, looking straight at me. In the interest of minimizing movement I used the rifle to check for antlers... too much mist, not enough power or light, I moved it to nine power, and looked again, at this point I'm 80% sure this thing has horns, probably a good sized forky, it's any buck, so if I saw antlers, I was going to shoot, but %80 is not good enough, I reached for the binos, I'd get one extra power, 10mm of objective, no moisture, and a steadier look, then it bolted. What a joke, 5 minutes before shooting hours are over on the final day of modern season, I think I might have seen the only legal buck I saw all season...wow.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/15 - 11/21
Second season elk in West Beulah started Sat, Nov 8th. Just son-in-law and me this year. Cold and snowing off and on. Tues, 11:00 a.m. Jeremy drops a 5-point in his tracks-back in camp and everything hanging by 5:00 pm. Couple of drinks around the fire - a great day. Early morning hunt Wed - old man too tired to do much more hunting - early trip back home. 1/2 elk for each of us plenty! Wish we could bat .500 on every trip-great fun!!

Re: Hunting Reports Week 11/15 - 11/21
I went out looking for elk all day Saturday & Sunday morning. I saw rubs & some older sign, but nothing fresh. They opened the gates to the tree farm I was on during deer season, so the herd may have been spooked off by all the road hunters & hasn't returned yet. I did find an old apple orchard in the middle of the woods w/ piles of apple-infused bear poop everywhere. Of course, I ran across a really dumb blacktail buck much nicer than the spike-by-fork I shot. (My first deer... I'm planning to get a story about it out eventually.) I spooked him trying to get my camera out, but he came back & watched me for quite a while when I used my cow elk call. I'll get a detailed story out about him too. Here's a couple pics.
You can't tell, & I was never able to see for certain, but I'm pretty sure he was a fork w/ eyeguards, but he has deep forks, long tines & a decent spread.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">I haven't tried to put 'em through photoshop yet. Maybe I'll have a chance over Thanksgiving vacation. They could definitely use some red-eye reduction, or make that yellow-eye for deer.

I went out hunting for elk in the scappoose unit today. Lots of snow, but no elk. It was kind of neat to hunt in the snow, but I never found any elk tracks. It amazing how you can walk back the way you came, and have fresh deer tracks following yours, yet never see them. Lots of road hunters out today.
