Default Anti-virus

My year is up and was wondering what the majority of you guys are using. I am thinking of either Norton or Mcafee. Right now I am using Mcafee and thought it is okay but at work I'm using Nortons and like it a touch better.

If your using another please explain and why are you using it.

Thanks

Fishtales, I'm curious. What evidence do you have to base your endorsement of AVG? I'm not at all saying it doesn't work, but Symantec (Norton)has won best product of the year award two years running now by PC Magazine for their AV product. I've been running it in an enterprise environment of more than 3000 machines for four years with no virus outbreaks. It got my vote here.

Jeannie, do you know about AVG Free Edition for Windows?

I have had others. In my opinion AVG is the best and it's free. If you want to pay you can upgrade.

I offer the following as support for my statement, not intended in anyway to start an argument.
Here is the business pro . Home free version awards on bottom of page.
Several magazines held AVG in the top ten free anti virus programs around. I work in the Internet supplier world, have currently over too hundred businesses on the AVG program. Here is link for you to check out the pro version. Same awards for the free version.
AVG Anti-virus Pro Reviewer's Comments

AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 is a great program. It has everything you need in an Anti-Virus program; email scanning to include email attachments, boot scanning, and auto updating of the virus definitions. From the basic interface you can quickly do one of three tests:

. Complete Test - Scans all hard drives on your computer.
. Removable Media Test - Scans floppies, CDs, Optical disks, external hard drives, etc.
. Quick Test -- Scans the most important areas/files on your computer.

Ease of Use:
AVG Control Center (a.k.a. AVGCC) is the main control component of the AVG system. AVGCC is executed every time a user logs in. Through it you can edit various settings of the AVG system and monitor the status of individual components. The AVGCC system tray icon is multi-colored when all components are working correctly and turns gray if there is a problem. By clicking on the icon you can open main the windows of AVGCC.

AVG Anti-Virus also has an Advanced Interface that gives you a very nice view of tests to run, scheduled tasks, test results, etc. in an easy to read tree layout. This interface is geared more toward advanced users than the novice computer user. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but once you get the hang of it you will find it logical and easy to maneuver.

Feature Set:
The Virus Vault is what most anti-virus programs call a "Quarantine" area. When the resident scanners find a virus, you can store the file in the Virus Vault until you have time to heal the file and then restore it to its original location.

AVG Anti-Virus also allows you to create an MS-DOS Rescue Disk from the Control Center. Scheduling options include alternatives to run tasks even when the schedule was missed. You can schedule tasks to be performed even when there is no user logged on to the computer.

GriSoft does offer a free version of AVG Anti-Virus but it lacks several features such as:
. No Advanced User Interface
. Disabled Advanced Scheduling of Tests
. Disabled Creating of Your Own Tests
. No Technical Support
. No Advanced Operations with Test Results - (e.g. healing infected files, deleting them or moving them to Virus Vault so you can deal with them later
. No Quick Test Option available

Ease of Installation:
This product is very easy to install. No problems.

Help/Support:
They have great support with their online support page, Knowledge Base Search, and FAQs page.

Effectiveness:
The VB 100% logo is awarded to anti-virus products that:
Detect all "In the Wild" viruses during both on-demand and on-access scanning in Virus Bulletin's comparative tests.

Generate no false positives when scanning a set of clean files.

Summary:
AVG Anti-Virus 7.0 is a great program and has received the coveted VB100% rating and is certified by ICSA Labs.

I use Panda Titanium. It's number 10 on fishtales list. I bought it three years ago as it was rated number one in one of the big PC magazines.

I've been very happy with it. It's stopped a couple of viruses that I've picked up, it updates itself automatically everyday, and doesn't have the horrendous bloatware problems that both Norton and McAfee have.

In summary, it's simple and effective.

I would go with the Norton. I know many people will disagree with me but I would not install any free software on anything other than a test computer until I could verify compatibility with other applications. Sometimes free stuff breaks other stuff because it does not undergo the testing that a Windows certified application does. The last thing you want is for something to overwrite a system dll file with one tailored for the application. Many of the free applications do this.

Between Mcafee and Norton I have had the best results with Norton. I have several networks that I have implemented a managed Norton antivirus solution. I have found that Mcafee does not like to work as well with other applications as Norton does.

I have also found Norton to be a better personal computer antivirus solution. I have found that Norton's live update is superior to Mcafees similar update feature, and I have found that Norton usually has updates faster than Mcafee.

Either product will provide you with good antivirus protection. But I say go with Norton.

I would be very interested in hearing more about this problem that you speak of regarding free software, HMBF. Are you speaking about some lines of code cobbled together by Joe Geek in his mother's basement, or are you talking about the types of free software like AVG (which has been around for many years and is VERY well tested) or other free software packages.

To claim that high quality free software like AVG et al is somehow less quality and more likely to crash your system than commercial software is at the very least inaccurate.

As an aside, I went to uninstall Symantec Live Update off of an XP Home machine the other day while logged in as Admin. I was stopped by the Symantec uninstaller, telling me that I didn't have sufficient rights to do that. If not Admin, then what?

Well Dave, there is a big problem with free software. The majority of it should not be installed on a computer. Perhaps I am incorrect about AVG but I was just at thier Website and it did not look like the software was free. There was a stripped down version for free.

There is good free software out there. Some Examples:

Pov-Ray
G4U Imaging software
Gimp

Your problem with the Symantec LiveUpdate uninstall is definately not a good thing. I would suspect something more to do with the Home edition version of XP. I have seen similar permissions problems. Be brave and rip it out through the registry. But don't forget this key {72C2714F-4478-11D3-B537-00902771A435} and the other easily identified ones.

If anyone here has Comcast, and I know many of you do, you can get Mcaffee virus software for free off of the Comcast website in the downloads section.

AVG has two versions .. one for comercial and one for private. the commercial is by fee only.. the private or home use is free. This is the only antivirus to have. its updated via net daily, runs in the back groun without the stupid norton / macafee <petunias>. but hey .. you can always go and spend money on those programs if you want.

It's really too bad we need to have Anti-Virus protection on our computers.

If your going to spend money on a computer, you may as well keep it protected.

Here's the free version of AVG. It updates regularly for free, and scans regularly for free. As far as free software goes, it's fantastic and has been a staple of my recommendation list for about 6 years.

Understandable about your concern about free software, but only to a point. I could (and oneday when I'm motivated I will) put together a thread of free, trusted, and GOOD software for Windows. But not now.

With that said, AVG is great.

I had Norton antivirus for two years and didn't have a single problem, decided to upgrade to the Norton Internet Security and within 6 month period I had it would not work and i'd have to jump thru the Symanitic website trouble shooter screens to finally find out how to delete it so I could reinstall it... it wasn't as easy as just deleting a program, registry mods and the such...Have had AGV for two years and it's been flawless.

Last year before I purchased Mcafee I was using Ad-aware and Hi-jack and cwshredder and Spybot. They worked for a while. The freebies eventually didn't get rid of my virusses. At the time also microtrend's or was it trend micro, housecall didn't get rid of them either. Then I purchased Mcafee and it worked great with protection that I needed and is more than half the price of Norton. It just takes a while booting up. I just Renewed Norton at work and it has something that pops up saying you covered everytime you reboot that I am growing weary of quickly.
