Default Wilson unit - info for youth hunt

I am going to take my 2 nephews hunting in december for their first elk hunt. I have not hunted in that area in a couple of years. I have mainly hunted around spruce run road and four seven ridge off of the nehelam river.

I was wandering if any hunters hunted those areas or other areas in the wilson unit. I would like to go scouting over the next few weeks and let the boys get famaliar with the area before we go hunting.

Any advice would be greatly appricated.

Thanks Finz

Your nephews are in for a blast! My brother and cousin have had 100% success up there on that hunt. My brother got the tag 2 years and my cousin 1 year. They are both too old now. All of their elk came from just driving to places and glassing openings. Their favorite road is the one that goes up from Garibaldi right up a long the Miami river. You get up there and cross the railroad tracks and stay to the right after crossing the river. (sorry a little foggy on details and road names) There is elk all over up in there. The other place we've always been able to find them is up Jordan Creek right off of HWY 6. Just go drive around and scout, I can't remember a day when we went up there and drove around glassing and did not see some elk. Some times they are too far away to shoot or down in some nasty canyons but sometimes they are just standing a long the road as well. My brother missed a cow right off of HWY 6 one year. They were on the other side of the Wilson so we stepped over the gaurd rail and hiked down in the brush a ways and had a nice broadside shot at about 80 yards. I don't know how he missed but when we went to look for blood I saw his fresh bullet hole in an alder tree about 8 feet up from the ground above where the elk was. Gotta love youth hunts. :grin: They are lots of fun.

Good info Salmon Stryker, im also looking for info on the wilson unit. My boy drew a cow tag for the youth hunt Dec 20th. I know the southern part of the wilson unit pretty good. Just a side note, Jordan creek is in the Trask unit. Great place to hunt elk but in the trask unit.

Well thats the thing. My dad and uncles had hunted that unit (wilson) a lot and we always called it "Jordan Creek". But it was on the north side of Hwy 6 just past The Jordan creek store. There is a cement bridge to cross the Wilson and then the road forks right after the bridge. We always stayed left and went up in the hills from there.

Salmon Stryker,

That's Jones Creeek you are referring to. LOTS of elk in the area. If you stay on a general NW heading while travelling back there, you can end up at the head of the Kilchis drainage. Just keep driving downstream and you're at Jennie's house. :smile:

Salmon Stryker;
The first place you are talking about is Cook Ck.. It is off of Foss Rd, Which is off of the Miami. Lots of elk iin there they should be in the flats by now especially with the cold weather. Jones Ck has elk in it no matter which side of the fork you go up. So does the kilchis drainage and Cedar butte for that matter. One just has to have patience in finding them. I learned a long time ago that it takes about one second for a rotten hunt to turn good. Or one step by an animal if you will.
For the rest of you good luck I hope you find the kids elk. They are there I see them alot. I drive a truck for a living and see them by the highway frquently
