Tule, are you looking for a mount? Why so much interest in wood ducks?

There's a Woody Island on the lower Columbia in Lewis and Clark National Wildlife Refuge.

It is partially wooded, hence the name.
There's likely a few wood ducks around, but like the rest of that area, you're going to find far more mallards, teal, etc. out there. I saw a few wood ducks near there this summer, but have never seen one during duck season.

If I was looking to hunt wood ducks, I'd focus on the lower Willamette and Tualatin River areas. They like to eat acorns, so sloughs and backwaters running through oak forest would be likely places to find them.

good luck in the quest....Mike

Find a place that has a filbert orchard near the river. Right at dusk, in the last few minutes of shooting time, the woodies will start dropping in. It's my experience that you will only have a few minutes of shooting time to collect one since they seem to follow the dusk.

As an aside, a good friend of mine had a couple of wood ducks nesting in a tree just off his deck. One morning he watched a raccoon reach in and eat the entire clutch of eggs. A whole brood wiped out in about three minutes. :depressed:
