Default painting shotguns

Anyone ever painted their shotgun?
I know someone must've because I've got a Remington 870 painted in a very nice desert marsh pattern.

I also have a flat black Benelli Nova that I want to do in camo and am willing to make my own stencils, etc...
But does it take a special kind of paint? Solvent resistent? Just spray it with Rust-O-Leum?

Bill,
I did a quick search and came up with these:
http://yellerdawg.com/howto/gunpaint/instruction.html
http://pages.pathwaynet.com/~bketner/guncamo.htm

I paint my decoys every summer and have a tough time getting it to stick well to the plastic. You may have the same problem with the plastic stock on your gun. The best solution I've found for decoys is the primer auto body shops use on plastic car bumpers. You can get it at auto parts stores that sell paint.

Good luck with the project.

Mike

Be careful using auto body paints and primers. Some of them have isocyanates in them that can cause respiratory sensitization, which can lead to violent athsmatic responses. Just a heads-up.

Those are great! I just happen to have a beater Wingmaster that needs some dressing up. I'll practice on that.

I used undercoating on my Mossy 500, lightly sanded it first, still good.

Bill
Hunters specialties make a paint for doing camo on bows, I have done guns with it, but powder solvent will take it off so you have to be careful when you clean the gun. The nice thing is you can take it off with out harming the gun and stock. I do not know if it will stick to a non wood stock. I got it at G.I.Joes. good luck.

I rattlecanned mine. Primer is flatter( no glare) than paint.

It strips off with a good solvent. But I only clean once in a while. Since the wood and metal are pretty much sealed from the elements, corrosion and rust are minimal.

I do shoot rem oil into the works every once in a while to keep the exposed stuff( did not paint the inside of the action or trigger. Just the outside.) semi protected.

The cool deal about paint vs a factory camo job is you can freely change the paint pattern if your vanity tells you to. or duck season ends and turkey season is about to start. The versatile redneck.

If you use paint, make sure it is "Ultra Flat". I have had problems with glare in the past. I would think most any paint intended for hunting should be pretty flat. But just because it is the right color does not mean it will work.

Happy spraying.

Mark and the flat black dog.

Bill I just re-painted my muzzleloader. It was just semi gloss, tectured black. I stripped it down to the low quality wood, put primer on it, then used a combination of camoflouge paints found at GI Joes of FMs, Krylon makes them, they are ultra flat, and just a couple other shades of browns and greens. I just made stencils of leaves and twigs, painted it a base color, then sprayed the stencils on. When I was done I sprayed it with a clearcoat protective finish (the same one I use finishing rifles). I'll post pictures if I get a chance and you're interested.

I'm in the middle of painting mine right now. If you have pictures of your camo paint job I'd love to see them for some more ideas. BTW, I bought H.S. camo package with tan, brown, green and black in it. What do you use the black for? Seems like it defeats the purpose.

Guys have painted my Win. 1400 and Rem. 11-87 several seasons, but I found to make it really cool get cheap paint in camo colors at Wally world, and go out side and find some nice maple leaves to use as over spray patterns, paint your light coat as a base and then go over with the leaves as outlines, really comes out cool and then you can wipe it down or clean it off at end of season and do it again next year. Have fun and pratice a little and you'll be surprised at the results............

I painted my 270 rifle stock and i just used a good spray primer and made some cutout stencils to look like tree leaves and ferns , painted with spray paint a few different colors , green, brown, white . with a forest green background and finished with a good poly finish . haven't had a chip yet. only problem was when i cleaned it for summer must have had some of the gun oil drip out and it loosened the paint in a nice little streak. Oh by the way it is a synthetic.

I'm almost done with mine. I'll post a picture as soon as I can. I used the instructions posted on here by MikeT and it's worked very well. Thanks, I feel like I have a whole new gun.
