There will be many people at the dock that will be happy to take what fish you do not want. I gave away about half of what I brought back there at the dock. I think that now there are also food banks there to meet the boats.

Can you pick out the 5 Tuna over 200#?

This is not the trip that Hoggemin and Keta are on. Just a picture of a lot of big tuna.

Good afternoon folks. Yesterday was yet another good day of tuna fishing. We finished off in the evening with mostly all big fish. The general all around report from all the boats in the area was excellent. Some of the best big tuna fishing any of us has ever had. the people on the trips this week have seen and experienced historic sportfishing to say the least. Our last two fish in the evening were really nice ones . One estimated at 287 and another at 290 . It was really a treat to finish off looking at those monsters..

Today has been more or less a day of winding down. We fished up the ridge for just a few wahoo and we are going to finish our trip off tomorrow on the ridge hoping for a few more wahoo. We will report again tomorrow.
Wonder if Lee or Mike got the big ones? Looks like they got there at the right time. I can see it now showing up with a ton or two of Yellowfin looking for freezer space

Everyone knows how lucky Mike is... I'm going to bet he got the 290 YFT
and were stuck here

Aaahh yes....Mike the raffle man.

"And the winner is....Hoggem'in"

"And the winner is....Hoggem'in"

"And the winner is....Hoggem'in"

"And the winner is....Hoggem'in"

I wonder what he is doing at this very moment.....maybe collapsed in the galley, hardly able to chew his food, red welts under his arms, sore back, and a big dung-eating grin as he wonders in disbelief if he is in a dream, or if he really does have 4 200+ lb yellowfin in the hold with his tag on them....

The Rooster was scheduled to get back to the dock this morn at 0900 and they are very good at arriving on time, even early sometimes, the crew has to turn the boat around as their next trip is leaving at 1300 this pm. Unloading goes pretty good considering, all the passengers do help in dividing up the fish to the folks who caught em. The skipper will weigh up alot of the fish to settle the jackpot and alot of pics are taken then which takes more time. Everyone is anxious to see if their fish went over the special "cow" mark of 200lbs. THEN Hog/Keta are gonna have to figure out how to move their fish around and how they are going to bring em home as they will be giant popsicles. Not like moving 25lb albies. The big stuff won't fit into half totes so maybe they'll have the fish processed and shipped home or else donate some.

The Royal Star also came in this morn with a couple more boats due in Sun. It will be an incredible sight to see all the masses of jumbo YFT from this record breaking week for the Long Range fleet.

Don't worry about tackle for these kinds of trip as all the boats will rent the appropriate gear if need be. Might want to start looking into making reservations if anyone is serious as some of the boats are chartered or booked up to a year out. Crew are very very helpful helping you out on anything from what kind of connections to use (hollow spectra to mono) knots to tie or crimp on hooks, to rod/reel to use for the various baits you might use. Pretty incredible to be getting "Cowtown" quality usually found on the longer 16-18day trips for a 10 day price. You never know if the fish will cooperate every fall but they have been showing for the past 3 yrs now with this fall being of course the best yet.

I'm sure some great fish stories are coming soon........

Thanks, Booja, for the rundown. You're making my mouth water. It's soooooo hard to be sitting here listening to the stories and knowing that we're 230+ days out.

My hands are starting to shake....

Lee has already asked Me and Pops to make room in the freezers

I am getting ancey as to how much they did catch and how big they were

Sure going to hear some good stories about this trip and hope he took a bunch of pictures.

Looks like YFT and Wahoo are on the menu here for quite awhile

Noel, don't do this to us. This is unforgivable. Fess up right now!!!!! At least give us a little taste.

Did Mike & Lee each get at least one 200+ lb fish?

Did they make us Oregonians proud?

Lifted from another source. Our two heros are mentioned!!!

----------------------------------------

306-pound Tuna Caught

The 30 anglers fishing with Andy Cates aboard the Red Rooster III got more than their money’s worth, decking 35 tuna over 200 pounds on the Chark Bait Charter that returned to H&M Landing and Lee Palm Sportfishing November 12. One of the tuna was over 300 pounds, only the second such so far this season.

“I was reeling in to untangle,” said Howard Konishi of Bothell, WA, “when he bit. I had a butt-hooked sardine for bait, and it was just spinning away out there. I was wrapped in a lot of lines, but the crew got me out of trouble.

Photo here...

“He ran about 200 yards, away from the bow, and that’s where I fought him for two hours, and that’s where he came up. The crew helped me get the rod over the anchor, or I never would have got him.

“This is my first jackpot wince 1968,” noted Kohnishi. His tuna weighed 306 pounds. He said it bit on a 5/0 Super Mutu hook, tied to 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Spectra backing on an Avet 50W reel and a home-built Calstar 7455 XXH rod. He also had a 216-pounder.

John Thompson of Saco, ME was second, for a 255.5-pound yellowfin. He said he bagged it with as sardine on a 4/0 Super Mutu hook, 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Spectra backing on an Avet 50W reel.

Third place went to Paul Heggestad of Laguna Niguel. He got a 253-pounder on a mackerel on a 7/0 Super Mutu hook. He said he fished with 130-pound Izorline and 100-pound Spectra, on a Tiagra 50 reel and a 760H rod.

Photo here...

The 292-pounder caught by Richard Grimes of San Francisco was a handoff and therefore ineligible, but a huge tuna nonetheless. Richard fished a mackerel on a 7/0 Eagle Claw hook, with 130-pound Izorline and 130-pound Spectra backing. He used an Avet 50W reel and a home-built 660 XXH rod.

Others who caught yellowfin tuna over 200 pounds were: Mike Parent, Downey, 216, 232 pounds; Pat Wollenberg, 201 pounds; Dave Motter, Grants Pass, OR, 221, 235.8 pounds; Ray Morales of Moorpark, 224.7 pounds; Don Day of San Diego, 214 and 218 pounds; Greg Henry of Costa mesa, 205, 217, 228 and 238 pounds; Mike Reader of Torrance, 218 pounds; Dennis Davis of Bellflower, 209 pounds; Mark Madsen of San Diego, 203, 249 pounds; Wayne Sebern of Grover beach, 231, 242 pounds; Robert Cobb of Chula Vista, 220 pounds; Marlin Sanders of Ellsworth, IA, 212, 218 pounds; Jay Shivers, 204 pounds; Michael Potts, Portland, OR, 219 pounds ; Bob Lowes of lake Forest, 212 pounds; and Scott Johnstone of Loveland, OH, yellowfin tuna of 217 and 253 pounds.

The trolling jackpot was won by Lee Puttman of Klamath Falls, OR, for an 86.4-pound wahoo. He also got tuna that weighed 203 and 214 pounds.

------------------
(the author of this regular report says the following about the return of these boats)
------------------------
A Monster Day

There was no way I could keep up with the sheer volume of cows, or 200-pound tuna, coming off five boats that docked in San Diego November 12. After 12 years in the job, this was finally a day when there was no possible way to speak with each angler who got such a tuna, because there at least 153 such fish off-loaded in approximately three hours.

Five boats accounted for the fish. Shawn Steward on the Excel had 38; Andy Cates on Red Rooster III had 35, including a 300-pounder; Tim Ekstrom on the Royal Star had 31; Brian Sims of the Qualifier 105 had 29; and Brian Kiyohara and the American Angler got 20 cows. That’s a nice average of about 30 cows per boat, on a ten-day trip, yet!

Ordinarily, I’d interview each of the cow-catchers, note their accomplishments and track the tackle they used to take these trophy tuna. Not today. What follows is the best I could do, and I offer my apologies to any angler who failed to get the credit he or she deserved for what has always been a special occasion.

Over the past 12 years, an “average year” might have seen 200 such fish from October to June. Today likely beat some years. And it isn’t over yet. The next few days will see more eye-opening catches. Rumor has it the Shogun will present a massive catch, and the Independence will have something like the same thing; around 38 cows, give or take a few. We’ve never see anything like this in San Diego. Hold on to your hat; there’s more to come!
