Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News Tuesday
Something odd happened last night. My TV was tuned in to a news station. Now that is very odd since I find TV news has pointless and sensation based information. Anyway....
As the station did a promo for a coming story I noted it had to do with hunters who are idiots.
(This I think is what news station managers think they have to show in order to get rating of any kind.)
So here is a heads up. Maybe you'll see someone you know or have met. Maybe you will want to tell of Channel 2 for their reporting. Or maybe you will now make a point of not tuning in the channel 2 news at 5 PM. Hmmm not a bad idea
The stories promo film clip I saw showed hunters piling out of a truck and pointing their loaded weapons at each other. Didn't see any actual shooting. The message could be about having a rewuired adult firearm safety class.
Maybe there will be an archery hunter filmed shooting at an elk at 60 yards or a rifel hunter taking an off hand shot at a bull at 500 yards.?

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
I saw the preveiw also, it kind of makes me worry.
While I do beleive that people doing unsafe and illigal things should be exposed and punished, I dont think that this is the correct way.
This is just more ammo for anti hunting groups, and makes the non hunting public create a negative veiw of all that hunt.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
Grant McOmie is usually pretty good about pointing out both sides of the story with his reports, the good and the bad. I'll wait to seee the report tonight before forming an opinion.
I would however like to see some more positive hunting stories aired on the news. I recently saw a show on the hunting channel were this 14 yr. old girl took this beautiful ram here in Oregon, how about a story about her and what that hunt meant to her and her family (Dad). You are correct, it's all about perception.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
actually, a piece ran yesterday on same channel - it was good, covered duck hunting on the coast and for the first time that I can remember actually showed the hunters shouldering their guns and actually dropping the birds. Some great shots were shown, including multiple hits on teal buzzing by. The second piece about unsafe hunting runs tomorrow I believe (Tuesday).

Probably draw some heat for this one, but after watching the preview on the website, I was wondering why Grant wasn't wearing some blaze to keep himself visible.

Good question. Not required if you are not hunting, but still strongly encouraged.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
The game cops did a pretty good job emphasizing that these folks were the small MINORITY of most folks with tags (or not) out during season. Notice I did not call them hunters, and Grant, I believe you do the majority of the hunting world a disservice by calling them such.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
I watched the story off of the katu website. It's a little scroll down to the link.
http://www.katu.com/
Grant says something at the end I don't get. Oregon is one of three states that requires an adult to take a hunter safety course. I either heard wrong or he said something incorrect to my understanding.
It was not a slam story on hunting at all. It didn't try to cover the most dangerous of all hunting experiences though. At least it used to be that bird hunters had more accidents than big game or varmit hunters.
I think they enjoy showing the dumming elk and deer in the story. Hard to say when the ODF&G will start having remote controlled ducks or grouse to tempt hunters. If they do it will be expencive. One $300 bird decoy would olny work for one shot...

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
Once a gain I thought it was well done by Grant it is hard to show every thing in a 2 min segment. I will be watching tonight to see what he ment by the hunters saftey statement.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
ehunter.
Did you hear that comment at the end ehunter? Something about Oregon being only one of three states regarding something with adults required to take hunters safety. I think Grant stated it upside down on that one.
It does seem ridiculous that to go SCUBA diving one needs to be certified while to go hunting one doesn't. It wouldn't change the second amendment to require someone to be certified to go hunting. I think that as it is now a lot of people learn well over 50% of what they know about firearms by watching TV/Film entertainment that has gun use in it.

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
Hey Steven yes I was confused too I am hoping tonight he will clear that up. Personaly I always get a kick out of the deer and elk decoys. I have seen them and even glassed them too. I don't know what you can do about hunters getting buck fever but I still chuckle as they blast away on tape. Love the guy who hit his brakes slides ten yards burns rubber backing up and still has time to shoot at a decoy elk. I would love to see a bull stand still for that long.
Steve if your 21 in Oregon you don't have to go though hunters saftey I don't think it's a requirement to buy a tag. So you could have never have fired a fire arm and go buy a tag. I have a story about just that happening and this guy shot the first deer he saw a doe. He did not get busted, being naivie is bliss

Re: Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News Tuesday
I watched this, and the only illegal actions that I saw where when a trigger was pulled. Its not illegal to jump out of your truck for a closer look (you don't even have to wait for it to stop moving if you don't want, but that's probably best).
The guy in the Toyota burning rubber really was funny.
One thing that bothered me was when they showed the old guy with a young kid (probably grampa with his grandkid). I didn't see him doing anything wrong. He was standing off the road with the kid slightly behind him with his rifle pointed at the decoy. What exactly was wrong with this scene?

Re: Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News Tuesday
I think besides shooting from the roadway or truck, the main point was about safety. It was hard to tell in some of those photo's but their were a lot of people passing by the bussiness end of the rifles!

Yes, there was a lot of that. You're right, the article was about idiot hunters - not poachers (the people shooting out of their truck windows WHERE poachers).

Re: Story on Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News
I know of two stories where an adult new to hunting shot an elk thinking they were taking a deer.
I think that goes under muzzle control. When I took the hunter safety course the first time I passed with 100 % which surprised me since I seldom managed that at school. The point is about 90% of the answers that were the right ones in the multiple guess had the words muzzle control or control the muzzle of the fire arm.

Re: Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News Tuesday
They were probably busting the ones shooting from the roadway too. Remember, if it is a public roadway (state, county, federal) you must leave the right of way to make the shot. About the only road you do not have to do this on is private timberland roads. Kinda confusing.

Re: Idiot Hunters at 5 PM Channel 2 News Tuesday
There were several shots from the truck and that is not legal and the shots of the wife and husband shooting around each other was insane. I doubt if many peopel really understood the point he was trying to make and that is about gun saftey and muzzel control. People get excited and common sense goes out the door.
