Are you a NRA member?

If not why?
If so, why?

I let my membership slip some time ago. First let me say I think are important. But I think they crossed the line with the plastic guns a couple of years ago. I couldn't understand that one. I have a more moderate view point on guns. I have a concealed weapons permit and I am very much pro gun. So flame away guys.

I was a member for ten years but quit after they started meddling into the land management and wildlife management arena. If they would stick to just gun rights then I would probably rejoin. You can own all the guns you want but when there is no more land or game to hunt what good are your guns?

So yes flame away also!!

They have made some questionable desicions about hunting and trapping in the past. I chose not to support them.

I'm not a member. While I support the basic premise, they have gone too far extreme for me.

Call me a middle of the road moderate. I've got problems on both sides of the fence.

I'd be interested in some of the specifics as to how extreme you think they are. For example, what is the trapping issue they've taken a position on? I wasn't aware of one.

As for the plastic guns, there's no such thing, at least not commercially made. Glocks and similar guns all have enough steel to set off a metal detector like an ordinary gun, so why should they be banned? I thought that was the right position for them to take.

Yep, I'm a member, and nope, I don't agree with all their agenda and "the sky is falling" hysterics. But I do think hunters and gun owners need a voice, and I can't think of another one.

Besides, the American Hunter is arguably the best all-around hunting rag available today.

What Skein said!!!!! The OHA is an organization you can get involved with in Oregon if you don't like the NRA. You should support someone who is standing up for your rights! IMO.....BH

Yes, I'm a member! I totally agree with skein's comments. I think this is similar to our fishing situation right now with sport fisherman and gillnetters. We need a strong voice supporting our gun rights and the NRA is that voice. We also need a strong group/voice for sport fisherman. If we fight and argue among ourselves we lose our united strength.

Since it could be perceived as a potential conflict of interest in my work I don’t officially belong to any organization. But I feel the NRA is overall good for hunting. Sure I don’t hold to their position say on, assault weapons, but IMO the NRA believes if they give an inch on one issue the opposition will just keep wanting more and more; there certainly is some merit to this thinking.

There is no “perfect” pro-hunting group who would hold to everything I feel or any of us would feel is appropriate, but that’s hardly the point. The NRA and I’ll add OHA aren’t “perfect” but both are good for the sport.

Fortunatly, there enough of us who are members that we can carry on our shoulders the sportsman/gun owners who are not. We can thank the NRA and the NRA alone that we don't have restrictions on our firearms that the UK and Australia have. I'm a life member and very proud of it.---------------------You're welcome.

IMHO I believe the future of our sport will rest on our ability to convince the non-hunting public that we are basically good ethical people who are responsible, and respect their safety. I think the NRA has lost sight of this. As an independent I'm also concerned that they are alienating democratic politicians, and democratic voters. In the long run we will need their votes too.

On a side note the first George Bush renounced his lifetime NRA membership shortly after leaving office. Does anyone remember the specific reasons he gave, or know if he has joined again?

Life Member. It is very important that we have a strong voice in Washington and in state capitols. I have friends in New York city and washington. These people can not understand hunting or gun ownership. These same people think that conservation is very important but most have never put one dime toward conservation. As we know if you buy a gun or ammo ect. we are putting 15% toward conservation projects. I think inspite of a few things the NRA has work rather hard for us.

I was neutral on this organization until they called me up recently to tell me that someone from the UN will be coming to my home to take away my guns. Yea right, what a bunch of morons.

I was a member for many years. One day I recieved a letter from them saying thank you to me for helping them build their new 6 million dollar office complex.
After that letter I started to look very close at what they spend money on and how much actually goes to fight for rights of gun owners. That was more than enough for me to realize they have turned into yet another big money pocket liners club now and gun owner rights are a very small percentage of what they spend $$$ on.
