Default 3D DEER MAULED????

Something tore up my archery 3D Buck deer this weekend. We found hair stuck to it. Who would have an idea where we could send some to find out what tore it to hell?! We suspect Cougar, but would like to know for sure. Especially since one was sighted in the Gales Creek area recently.

It is crazy, I dont know if I like it due to the fact it is 100 yards from my house at the edge of the woods.

A couple Sundays ago, last one of open deer season, my wife and I found a fresh cougar track less than 10 minutes driving from Gales Creek.

It was early in the am, we were up in a clearcut. Roughly 15 min before sun-up, we entered the area. The snow was just starting to fall. Very few flakes, but large. At first it looked like ash from a fire drifting down. When looking at the various tracks we came across, I spotted a cougar track.

It was about 4" across and pressed maybe a quarter inch into the mud. There were frost crystals reaching out from the edges of leaves on the ground, except where part of a leaf had been pressed down into large pad of the track. Talk about a shorts changer. Really wasn't a need to finish searching this area for deer. With a cougar that close, the deer are not going to be out in the open. At my wife's urging, we headed out to find another spot.

Every year mine get torn up by the local buck. You think I'd get smart and put them up during the rut. I guess its kinda traditional now so I can't.

This time of the year it could have been an old ruttin buck as well. Yes even the blacktail can be quite agressive when they are rutting.

Food for thought.

I have a family friend who runs a 3d shooting range on the coast here, and he said he has the deer attached almost 3 times each during the summer. The cougar targets also get hit. Interesting none the less, he said if you..spray human scent on them, it doesnt happen so often. They were definately cougar that hit these targets.

I used to have a McKenzie pronghorn 3D target in my backyard. One day in mid-November I came home from work and noticed the target was leaning at a 45 degrees. I started looking and saw some deep deer tracks in the lawn by it, and alot of gash's and gouges around the neck and chest area. I had 1/2" rebar in the legs and they were bent into doglegs.

What kind of hair was on the target?

We do have a lot of deer, but I saw no deer tracks near the deer just a few old elk tracks. but anything is possible. I have a buddy that is a licensed trapper for the state, he is coming over to look at the hair to see what he thinks,I told him it was orange and white and he got all excited.

Periwinkle,

My question zackly!

Maybe call it "de toilet....EWWWWWWWWWW"

Most mammals mark their territory with urine. We use sharpies. The problem is that coug's can't read. Whip it out!

If its during the rut, other deer will charge the decoys deer. They just think ots another buck that needs his butt wooped.

That would be cool to get that on film. the hair matched couger, infact lower leg hair. I hope it was just passing through so I have a few deer left for next year. I have been told that it was probebly a juvenile passing through the area.
