Pretty slow in my area of Saddle Mt. so far. Haven't heard of any elk taken yet. 2 more days to go for the first season. Did hear shooting on the Scappose side of the road about an hour before dark on opening day. Several different guns and mutiple shots sounded like someone got into em. I will definitely give a report after second season is over....Hopefully a good one.

Saw a whole 5pt in the back of a truck last night at the local minimart. Took 6 people to load it. Heard that there have been elk taken but not a slaughter. Non-oxy gas at the minimart

fishuntr2,

Will the Columbia Mainline be open during the weekdays of the Second Season? The signs at the gate indicate it won't.

Thanks

F'n M...My understanding is that the mainline will be closed during the week. I know the Clearcreek to Keasy section is supposed to be closed to hunting traffic but not sure about the Keasy to Mist section or the rest. Call the Longview Fibre Vernonia office (429-2605) and if you can manage to catch someone in they can tell you. Tonight I will be talking to some folks about their hunts and if I find out anything definite, I will post tomorrow. Good luck everybody on your second season hunts.

Just got off the horn with Longview Fibre.. All the Columbia mainline will be open for hunting traffic. I mentioned that there are signs up saying weekend only and was told that hunting traffic is allowed. There still will be areas closed to public entry in active logging and there are walkin only signs in other areas. Just be careful and when parking get well off the road. On outside corners sweepers can tag ya so be aware. Not a bad idea to monitor the cb during the week for truck traffic.

Thats right...My son dropped that radio last year and it was returned...This year we upgraded so have more to lose  Motorrola 7200's We will start hunting from the property and work west. Probably be seeing other hunters if we get up onto the sunset grade...seems to be a popular spot. Will be monitoring channels so be sure and let us know if the animals are headed our way  Again...Good Luck all.

Finally out of the woods and back at a computer. My son harvested a large 5-pt bull, The quarters totaled 430 lbs at the butchers. No digital pictures. We drove to the elk and loaded it whole in my truck...took the 2 of us about an hour to do this after gutting. My buddy got a spike on the scappose side of the road and transported to my shop to hang on the hood of his jeep. It was the only way he could haul it whole. Got pictures coming but not digital. My son is turning out to be an elk slayer...4 years elk hunting and 2 bulls now. Oh yeah....one bullet neck shot as the bull was feeding towards my son dropped the animal in its tracks..just under 150 yards.
