Hunted all of last week at Summer Lake and lit them up. Shot honkers, snows, and even a speck(picked it out of a flock of honkers). For ducks it was lots of mallards, also gadwall, wigeon, teal, and a few **** ducks. The weather was really in our favor so we picked our birds and shot them close in. Great week!

3 bands, too(one honker and two greenheads)

Today in south Benton county was terrible. Had two singles come into the field and got one of them, missed the other. With 15 minutes to go before shooting light all the birds had left the field, and there were easily a thousand of them or more. Refuge ducks seem to get smarter and smarter each year. Saw a few geese but not enough to mess with

Did ok on the baby geese.Limited but took until 1:30 to do it.They wanted in but I kept missing on purpose so I could keep hunting .Dogs are so unforgiving when you miss the easy shots.

Made a quick run down to Evans Creek for late Archery deer. Less than a quarter mile after I turned off the main road there's a buck in the road  , at least a 3x3 and it's about noon. I was too busy trying to park and get my bow to sit and count points. I'm in a canyon with a road cut into the side hill so the cut hill he went up was not going to work for me, so I drove anoter 100-200 yards and grabbed my GPS and bow and started struggling up the "easier" location, found a great hunting area, spooked three does before I could get through the nasty brush. never found the buck but got about 80 yards from two more does before getting busted. I'm still sore from that hill, hiking while up there was easy but the up and down sucks.
Went back to Canyonville to get a room, all booked because of a fight at the casino. I decided to get something to eat and think about where to go. I had the worst meal ever at a "restuarant". Got on the freeway to go look for a room and got a speeding ticket, so I just went home.
Like the governator said. "I'll be back".

The pond is filling as we speak. Birds are supposedly working the small pothole. But we still lack the water necessary to bring in big flights for a feeding frenzy. That will change in the next 2 weeks.

Several reports from the big river indicate that there are quite a few birds already here. A lot of birds for this early in the season.

I saw a flight of Cans south of Forest Grove late last week. They were heading to the refuge.

There seem to be a LOT of ducks on the refuges. With any luck they will eat themselves out of food there, and have to go elsewhere for yummy nutritional supplements.

In a couple weeks, we will break out the 2 3/4" sleeping pills. For the first time in 10 months the dog will wake me up instead of the other way around. And I shall go out with Dad. We will kill for the dog.

With any luck at all, the wind will blow hard, driving the rain into the safety of the blind. The hungry, energy starved birds will pitch into the dekes.

I may spill my coffee as I jump off the seat on a half dozen Widgeon. The great ones just appear out of nowhere. Which is why I forget about the MJB when I look up and see too many dekes swimming in front of the blind.. But the thermos is usually good for another half cup of lukewarm anti sleep medication.

Dad sneaks a thermos in too. But he tries to hide it from me. Something about me drinking it all. Whatever that means.

The camo waders will ride in the back of the pickup for the next 60 days. They will begin to smell. But I have grown to like this otherwise rancid odor.

It is time to feel alive again.

It is duck season.

Mark and the counting the days til it gets here dog.

Modern elk last weekend I shagged for reeltrouble in the marble and suixon units. We hunted one area that had been beaten down by elk, but talked to a fellow from a camp that went five for five on opening weekend, talk about elk success. He said they were pretty much the only hunters on top of this hill, but obviously the herds were a little spooky up there. We saw no hide nor hair. Did see one deer in the early morning light, and went back to that spot in the afternoon, to find lots of rubs, deer and elk. I'm wondering now if the one we jumped was the buck working the line. I'll be back in that spot, as well as another to check out the hot rub lines this weekend for late buck-rattlin antlers in the bag.

Tillamook bay ducks:

Quite a few birds, but they've been "edumicated".
Pretty slow, 3 birds, but we got there late because we bobber fished early (one dark buck, returned). Somebody shot a bunch in the morning.

shot out on the westside of Sauvies today. got a limit..1 greenhead, 2 gadwall, 1 spoonie, 3 widgeon. quite a mixed bag for the westside. normally i get all mallards and a few widgeon.

the westside shot pretty good today. i was out on Seal Lake #3 with a friend who picked up 6 birds. 1 Gadwall and 5 widgeon. seal #2 shot well..as did Seal #1.(at least it sounded that way..if they hit half of what they shot they should have had 3 limits.) Seal #4 would have shot well, but the guys hunting had to leave early, so they missed out when the fog lifted and the birds starting dropping in.

i hear that Mud Lake was doing less than stellar early on...but that may have changed later in the day.

I KNEW IT!!! Hunted out at Sauvie's today, drew #55 and got on Mud Lake #5. The morning hunt sucked, to say the least. Maybe heard 10 shots and saw about the same amount of ducks. We wanted to stay until the fog lifted, but my buddy had to get to work. I knew that once that fog got off the water it was going to pick up, DANG! Anyway, left with a teal and a mallard. Sure wish we coulda stayed until that fog lifted.

Just returned from 4 hunting days in the S. Fossil unit, Sutton mountain area. Hard hunting (note to self: next year look for area with an open road at the top of the hunt) and few elk. What elk were around were in 1s and 2s, no herd. Met up with several other hunters, all cool and willing to work together but all to no avail. We saw only a couple elk hanging in the 15 or so camps in our area. Some of the prettiest country I've ever seen from the top of Sutton, but I'm looking forward to having a few preference points again.

Opening day of late buck for WA today. I searched the hills high and low (marble and souixon,) with nary hide nor hair to show for it. Tried rattling antlers for the first time today... that was fun... and unproductive. Three grouse (note to self- good thinking on the brown realtree.) I'll be back at 'er tomorrow. Maybe some weather will get 'em moving around.

I can't be the only person hunting can I? A few animals today, four elk- that I saw, they were part of a much larger herd that winded me before I saw the rest. And two deer, one doe and one unidentified (lets just say doe). After I came up the draw where I saw the two deer, I found a gut pile... frustration. Some people from a cabin near ours had two hanging, the only deer I know of so far for late buck in the marble or souixon unit. One of them was the aforementioned gutpile. The search continues tomorrow.
