Default My First Elk

I thought I would share some pictures of my first bull Elk.
My Dad and I spotted him and seven cows four weeks before elk season opened; and knew he would be back in that same area. We watched that clear-cut every day from daylight to noon and then from three till dark. Finally on the fourth morning it was snowing and, there was some snow on the ground so we walked in at dark and waited for daylight. We saw him at the same time, and my dad told me to crawl on my stomach up to a log to get a good rest because it is 310 yards to him. So I crawled on my stomach in the snow to the log and got a good solid rest and squeezed of my 300 ultra mag and seen him rolled up in a ball were he fell off the steep hillside. Then came the fun part  getting him out luckily my dad has 1500’ of 5/16 haywire (small cable). He was a 4x4 and I was very happy to have my dad thier when I got my first Elk.

The reason why I fust have a tee shrit on is I just got done hiking out of a big canyon

We only needed a little over 900' and a tractor.
That tractor makes skinning it a lot easier and cleaner.

Well, we now know you can shoot, but can you pack? I can get you on a pack trip, maybe even 1500 feet of pack, through blackberries and salal. But with a 100lb pack, the snotty mud and step as heck hillsides make it easy to take a break. Good job, good eats

Nice animal! I'm still waiting to get my first elk. I guess I have to elk hunting in order to get one.

That vest is pretty clean for having to crawl on your belly through the woods.

Does that backhoe have a gambrel attachment?

Good job!! There is nothing like your first glimpse of an elk  through your scope. How long did it take for you to clam down to a point where you could take the shot?

Also, now that you have filled your tag, what area was he in?

Congrats!!

Thats good to hear. I think there was an ad for a "Packer" in the Florence area, we all know lots of brush and salal down there! The tractor in the picture would make a great add for the manufacturers of tractors....they could advertise...save a back...buy a tractor. Nice looking elk none the less.

Very nice bull. Looking forward to the 19th when smoke pole opens back up. That place looks familiar. The first bull is always the best. No matter how big they are.

Pics aren't showing because this post is from November, and most pics are cleaned out after two months I think, or might've been lost in the change to threads. Maybe fish hawg will put them back up for us, they were pretty cool, and I liked the one with the elk in the air hanging from the tractor.
