Paulina / E. Ft. Rock Elk

Well I got lucky this year & pulled a Hair Elk tag for Paulina / E. Ft. Rock - Unfortunately I had to submit for the draw without the rest of my party & they didn't get tags. I am not real firmiliar with the area and could use some help on this one. Anyone hunting over there Next week? I should be over from the 8th through the 13th. If I get lucky I'll be burning the remainder of my vacation at Summer lake.

I know little to nothing about the Ft Rock area, but a guy who post on here by the moniker of "Reel Handel" (RH) was chasing a nice 6 point during bow season, .... well... at least he said it was a nice 6 point

This bull would die of old age before RH got around to running an arrow thru it,

so if you can get ahold of RH and get the spot, you got a chance,

but now that I think about it [img]graemlins/idea.gif[/img] RH would probably just lie anyway,

so you are probably best not believing him anyway. :tongue:

Did some deer hunting over there last year and went over for a few days this year. Elk few and far between from what I saw. I did see some sign here and there but no hair. Some one in my party last year saw some Cow elk right around China hat during deer season but I never laid eyes on any myself.

I was up around China hat butte shoot me an email and I will try and point to the area that I saw the most sign. I will tell you that it was south east of China hat butte in a co-op travel area.

Doesn�t really surprise me with the swarm of road hunters up there around deer season that the only place I saw any was 5 miles off the road.

I talked to a rancher over there last week. he said that the elk are already down on his alfalfa fields. His place is the first on the left on the way to Fort Rock off hwy 31. I have seen many elk in that area and further north. Although some are on private property first thing in the am. Don't ask me where they go after that, because I haven't seen them while hunting coyotes later in the day. Most of the land north of Fort Rock and Christmas valley is BLM or Forest Service. Get a BLM map, it shows land ownership.

Iam the guy Bait O Eggs is talking about try north of the south ice cave and Toms butte off hyw. 22 . BOE was still sleeping on plastice sheets when i was killing elk.

Thanks for the info everyone. Hopefully I can turn up RH's 6pt & give him a new home in my freezer. I'll let you know how it turns out when I get back the week after next.

I havent seen RH in several years, but when I do, I will be forewarned by at least 15 minutes, because I will be able to smell him coming, and he looks an awful lot like Rancid Crabtree :shocked:
